The Russo brothers have revealed exactly what kind of impact Avengers: Secret Wars will have on the MCU, making me sure that the popular reboot theory will actually come to fruition. Marvel boss Kevin Feige confirmed the Russo brothers’ return for Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars in 2024, raising excitement for the Phase 6 movies, which could now follow in the footsteps of Infinity War and Endgame. Avengers: Secret Wars will bring the Multiverse Saga to a close in May 2027, and I reckon it’ll be the most thrilling spectacle the MCU has ever seen.
While the Russo brothers’ non-Marvel projects haven’t always fared so well, 2025’s The Electric State most recently, the duo have become two of the most successful directors ever because of their work in the MCU. Doomsday and Secret Wars are in good hands, and while we’re still not sure what stories will be explored in the upcoming Avengers movies, I’m very excited about them after new comments from the Russos. These comments also make me sure that one popular MCU theory will be brought to life, which will change the landscape of the MCU for good.
Secret Wars Being A “Beginning Story” Makes Me Sure An MCU Reboot Will Happen
Avengers: Secret Wars Will Be A New Beginning For The MCU
Anthony and Joe Russo recently spoke to Omelete and revealed more about Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. They suggested that, while Avengers: Endgame was “an ending story” for the MCU, Avengers: Secret Wars would be “a beginning story.” Infinity War and Endgame brought the Infinity Saga to a close, and marked the conclusions of Tony Stark, Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff’s stories. The idea of Avengers: Secret Wars being a “beginning” has me convinced the Russo brothers will be exploring a very different story, and setting up the next chapter of the MCU.
The greatest thing that ever happened is we got to, you know, get immersed in, you know, a 20-movie arc and see an ending to that arc. What’s compelling about these two new Avengers movies is they’re a beginning. It’s a new beginning. We told an ending story, now we’re going to tell a beginning story. And then who knows where we’ll go from there. Maybe it’ll be another five years but I think we just needed that time and perspective to figure out where it needed to go next, and the only thing that brought us back was the right story.
Back in October 2023, rumors emerged from MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios writer Joanna Robinson suggesting that she had conversations with Kevin Feige that saw him reveal the MCU is headed for a soft-reboot of sorts. This report spurred many major theories regarding possible character returns, revamped storylines and exciting new avenues for the MCU, and I think the Russo brothers’ suggesting Avengers: Secret Wars will be “a beginning story” supports these theories. Secret Wars should end the Multiverse Saga, but it could also be the beginning of something completely new for the MCU.
Why Avengers: Secret Wars Is The Best Place To Soft-Reboot The MCU
Marvel Comics Rebooted After 2015’s Secret Wars Event
Scheduled to be released in May 2027, Avengers: Secret Wars will mark 19 years of the MCU, so some might see it as being a waste to simply rewrite history and start over. However, I think, if pulled off correctly, this could be the best choice for the MCU to revitalize and refresh the franchise. Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars event from 2015, which the Russo brothers have confirmed will inspire Avengers: Secret Wars, ended with the Marvel continuity being altered, with the worlds of Earth-616 and Earth-1610 combined into one new timeline featuring characters from both.
I’d love to see something similar happen in the MCU, and, as the final movie of the Multiverse Saga and an adaptation of the Secret Wars event, Avengers: Secret Wars is the perfect place for this to occur. Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to pay off teases of incursions destroying universes from previous Multiverse Saga projects, which means Earth-616 might be destroyed. This means a soft-reboot of the MCU, perhaps in an entirely new universe, will be necessary, which makes me even more excited about Avengers: Secret Wars and the stories it will set up.
What New MCU Stories Could The Russo Brothers Begin In Avengers: Secret Wars?
Avengers: Secret Wars Will Set Up Many New Stories For The MCU’s Future
Perhaps the most exciting storylines that could be set up in Avengers: Secret Wars involve mutants and the X-Men. Marvel Studios acquired the rights to mutant characters in 2019 after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, but the process of integrating mutants into the MCU has been remarkably slow. I think Avengers: Secret Wars soft-rebooting the universe would be a great way to bring mutants into the MCU timeline as if they had been there all along, giving Marvel an easy way to bring some of its most iconic and powerful characters into the franchise.
There has been speculation that the next chapter of the MCU could be the “Mutant Saga,” featuring projects such as Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot, a recently-reported Academy X series, and even more mutant-centric storylines.
A soft-reboot of the MCU in Avengers: Secret Wars could also mark the return of notable heroes and villains who weren’t lucky enough to survive the MCU so far. This includes the likes of Tony Stark’s Iron Man, Steve Rogers’ Captain America, T’Challa’s Black Panther, Pietro Maximoff’s Quicksilver, Natasha Romanoff’s Black Widow and many more. Avengers: Secret Wars could create the opportunity for some of these characters’ unseen stories from Marvel Comics to get explored in the MCU, with new actors at the helm, which has me very excited about the MCU’s future.
