Saoirse Ronan’s Most Recent Movie Got A Limited Release, But Now That It’s On Netflix, You Shouldn’t Miss It

This article discusses alcoholism.

Saoirse Ronan’s The Outrun has come to Netflix following its October 2024 limited theatrical release, and despite how little attention the film got at that time, viewers should check the movie out now that it is streaming. The movie follows a young woman named Rona as she travels back to her childhood home in the Orkney Islands in Scotland after living in London. The Outrun is based on the true story of one woman’s journey to recovery after struggling with alcoholism and drug use.

Saoirse Ronan has numerous great roles, and her portrayal of Rona in the drama film is a meaningful addition to her filmography due to the delicate balance between heartbreakingly difficult moments and instances of hope and growth. Saoirse Ronan’s performance as Rona makes her an incredibly compelling character that audiences cannot help but root for. The Outrun received great reviews that highlight Ronan’s talent and the beauty of the cinematography.

Saoirse Ronan’s The Outrun Is Now Streaming On Netflix – What The Movie Is About

The Outrun Is A Biographical Drama Based On A Book

The Outrun is an adaptation of the 2016 memoir of the same name by Amy Liptrot, who served as a writer for the film. The film sees Rona return to the Orkney Islands after living in London for several years, and it switches between the two different periods to highlight how her experiences have brought her to her current situation. Rona is an alcoholic who has recently left rehab and is staying with her separated mother and father in their respective homes while attempting to rebuild her life.

The Outrun features stunning visuals of the environment which help audiences reflect on Rona’s place in the world and journey to overcome her struggles.

As she struggles to maintain sobriety, Rona gets a job working for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, which sees her listening to the call of a rare bird. The Outrun features stunning visuals of the environment which help audiences reflect on Rona’s place in the world and journey to overcome her struggles. The movie creates a very compelling division between Rona’s time in London and her time in Scotland, showing how her connection to her locations influences her perception, ultimately creating a fascinating and deeply human film.

The Outrun Gives Saorise Ronan Two Movies From 2024 That Deserve More Attention

Ronan Was Also In 2024’s Blitz

Following The Outrun, Saoirse Ronan also appeared in Steve McQueen’s war drama Blitz, which was released on Apple TV+ in November 2024. In Blitz, Ronan portrays a woman named Rita, who decides to send her son George away during the Blitz. However, George gets off the train in an attempt to make his way back to his mother but encounters ᴅᴇᴀᴅly obstacles along the way. Like The Outrun, the movie was well-received, gaining an 81% approval rating from both audiences and critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but it never got too much attention.

Unfortunately, it does make some sense why both of Saoirse Ronan’s 2024 movies did not receive too much attention because of how they were released. The Outrun received only a limited theatrical release at the beginning of October when much bigger films were dominating the box office. Likewise, Blitz was overshadowed by some of the bigger streaming releases of November. However, Saoirse Ronan gives great performances in two very different movies, and now that The Outrun is streaming, it finally has the chance to get the love it deserves.
