Amber Midthunder Offers An Update On Prey 2

Many months after the film was officially confirmed, the latest news comes in the form of a Prey 2 update from Amber Midthunder. The breakout star of the first film offered the first real update concerning the project, but the outlook is somewhat vague for now. “I don’t know what’s happening,” said Midthunder, after mentioning that she had heard some interesting ideas for the sequel. The project is certainly going to happen, but creator Dan Trachtenberg is currently working on Predator: Badlands.

Midthunder likely has nothing new to offer because there isn’t much to be given away yet. The project has taken a backseat to the Badlands, and won’t start to materialize until that movie is out of the way. However, Midthunder’s enthusiasm to return to the role is a good sign, and Prey 2 could be the direct sequel that many have called for.

A Sequel Is Happening Eventually

Prey 2 might have taken a little longer to be green-lit than many fans anticipated, but the sequel was officially confirmed in February 2024. Along with the announcement of the Prey sequel, it was also revealed that a standalone film, Badlands, will be released first. Because Badlands is first on the schedule, it will likely take a while for Prey 2 to begin development in earnest, and creator Dan Trachtenberg has been handling one project at a time.

So far, the only name that is even potentially attached to the cast of Prey 2 is original star Amber Midthunder as Naru. The young indigenous hero survived her harrowing ordeal with the Predator in the first film, and the announcement of the sequel also revealed that Midthunder was in talks to return. If Naru does return, it will consтιтute a major change in the Predator franchise, since none of the surviving heroes have ever returned for a sequel.

Beyond Amber Midthunder, the Predator didn’t leave many survivors to make for returning cast members. However, one key member of the Prey cast who could return is Dane DiLiegro who played the Predator. Though his Predator was killed in Prey, Prey 2 could follow the tradition of the original movie in which the Predator actor Kevin Peter Hall returned to play a new Predator in Predator 2.

Prey ended rather conclusively, with Naru defeating the Predator to become the lone hunter, but the pesky aliens have a way of coming back again and again. Since Amber Midthunder is in talks to return, it’s likely that the sequel is aiming to follow up with Naru and will probably see her take on another, potentially stronger Predator. Since the newly-announced standalone film, Badlands, will take place in the distant future of the Predator timeline, Prey 2 is free to continue events in the 18th century.

However, the movie will need to introduce some new wrinkle to keep things from getting stale. The science fiction aspects of the Predator series open the door for any number of possible twists, and Naru’s ongoing fight with the predators could see her taken into outer space where she can fight the intergalactic hunters in their own territory. Whatever happens in Prey 2, there is a universe of possibilities.
