Gwyneth Paltrow Picks $128M Psychological Thriller As Her Top 5 Movies, Believes Matt Damon Should Have Won An Oscar

Gwyneth Paltrow has named a $128 million 1999 psychological thriller movie among her top 5 favorite movies that she has made, as well as suggesting that her co-star should have won an Oscar for his performance. With a dynamic and varied career in film and TV, Paltrow came to prominence with roles in movies like Seven, Emma, Sliding Doors, and A Perfect Murder, before achieving international acclaim for her Academy Award-winning turn in Shakespeare in Love. Parenthood resulted in a reduction in roles in the mid-2000s before she enjoyed a career revival as Pepper Potts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Paltrow’s best films include quirky comedies like The Royal Tenenbaums, as well as independent dramas like Hard Eight, and blockbusters such as Avengers: Infinity War. One of her best and most underrated movies came with Steve Soderbergh’s medical thriller ensemble movie Contagion. Among many other big-name stars, such as Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard, Paltrow reunited onscreen with Matt Damon and Jude Law, after first working with them on another movie that proved to be a hit in 1999.

The Talented Mr. Ripley Received Critical & Commercial Acclaim

The Film’s Talented Cast & Smart Direction Made It A Hit

The Talented Mr. Ripley was released in 1999, the year after Paltrow won her Oscar, and co-starred Damon, Law, Cate Blanchett, and the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman. The movie tells the story of con artist Tom Ripley, who ᴀssumes the idenтιтy of a rich playboy he’s been sent to bring back to New York City. The film’s young, talented cast and inventive storytelling helped to make it a hit, and it is still considered one of the strongest thrillers of the 1990s. Paltrow’s extensive acting experience gives her a unique perspective on the movie, including praise for Damon’s performance.

While speaking with Vanity Fair, Paltrow discussed The Talented Mr. Ripley in very positive terms, declaring it as one of the top five movies she has appeared in, and stating that Damon should have won the Oscar for his role as Tom Ripley. She also detailed how working with Law and Hoffman was a unique experience, and helped to make her a better actor in the process. Check out the video featuring Paltrow’s comments below:

The Anthony Minghella Movie Remains An Influential Work

The Talented Mr. Ripley might not have been a blockbuster success or won any of its five Oscar nominations, but the movie remains a highly influential work. Netflix’s neo-noir psychological thriller miniseries Ripley is another adaptation of the novels, and many similarities have been drawn between The Talented Mr. Ripley and Emerald Fennell’s black comedy thriller masterpiece Saltburn. Paltrow’s fondness for the movie after so many years shows the impact it has had, along with the iconic cast and breathtaking scenery. It is an enduring chapter in the filmography of Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as an influential film to revisit more than once.
