Robert Downey Jr. suits up as Doctor Doom for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a new haunting Avengers: Doomsday concept poster. Victor von Doom is finally making his way into the MCU timeline, and with a major twist, as Downey Jr. will be bringing the villain to life in Phase 6. With Doctor Doom serving as the big bad for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, there are a lot of unanswered questions about how Downey Jr. will execute his version of Victor.
With Avengers: Doomsday filming set to begin this spring, @AdamSpizak shared a new concept poster for the upcoming Phase 6 installment, putting Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom in the spotlight. The Avengers: Doomsday poster imagines Doctor Doom on his throne as Victor von Doom holds the inner plate of Tony Stark’s Iron Man mask, with the rest of his helmet – and the skull inside it – on the floor beneath Doom’s throne. As the Russo brothers will helm both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the directing duo recently stated that Downey Jr. is doing a lot of preparation for his upcoming take on Doctor Doom. According to Joe Russo, Downey Jr. is “so immersed in it. He is so dialed in. [Downey’s] writing backstory, costume ideas … I think he just loves really rich, three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.”
What The Robert Downey Jr. As Doctor Doom Art Means For Avengers: Doomsday
Given how long fans have been waiting to see Doctor Doom in the MCU, it is no surprise that Avengers: Doomsday fan-art pieces are continuing to be created, with many wondering how this idea is going to work in Phase 6. When it comes to Victor’s cinematic depictions, Doctor Doom doesn’t have the strongest history on the big screen, which is why the stakes are even higher for the MCU’s adaptation of the famous supervillain. Since the MCU is also doing the twist of having the former Iron Man star portray him, fans are also expecting this to pay off in some regard for the character as well.
Since Doctor Doom wasn’t the original big bad of The Multiverse Saga, there will be a lot of groundwork for the Avengers: Doomsday story to do when it comes to shifting the focus from Kang to Victor. As Phase 6 will not only end The Multiverse Saga but seemingly this era of the MCU before the rumored soft reboot in Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s a big deal that Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will be involved with this arc. That is why once Avengers: Doomsday principal pH๏τography is underway, many fans are going to be keeping a close eye online on any potential set images, especially for Doctor Doom.

With the wide range of designs that exists of Doctor Doom in the larger Marvel canon, the Avengers: Doomsday concept poster is a perfect balance of honoring the comics while also having an MCU vibe to it. Whether or not this is what Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom will look like in the MCU remains to be seen, as there could be a very different design altogether in Avengers: Doomsday. Hopefully, as Avengers: Doomsday gets ready to start shooting, Marvel Studios will begin to unveil a few more details about how the MCU will tackle Doctor Doom through Downey Jr.
