The streaming release date for the critically acclaimed Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown has been unveiled. Starring Timothée Chalamet as the great singer-songwriter, James Mangold’s latest film delves into the early 1960s folk scene to document the rise of Dylan as a successful musician and when he caused somewhat of a stir for his electric sound at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. A Complete Unknown features an ensemble cast, including Edward Norton as folk icon Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, and Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez.
Now, Searchlight Pictures has revealed that A Complete Unknown will be available to stream on Hulu beginning March 27. This comes after the film’s successful theatrical run, during which A Complete Unknown earned eight Academy Award nominations, including a Best Picture nomination and a Best Actor nod for Chalamet’s portrayal of Dylan. The movie will also be available on Blu-ray and DVD starting April 9.
What This Means For A Complete Unknown
A Standout Awards Contender Is Coming To Streaming
A Complete Unknown was a strong contender throughout the awards season, with many critics and audiences considering it a major threat at the 97th Academy Awards. During Oscars weekend, A Complete Unknown beat out eventual winner Anora to become the third highest-grossing Best Picture nominee of the year. Reviews of A Complete Unknown praised Chalamet for fully embodying Dylan’s mannerisms, voice, and persona. With a SAG Award for Best Actor, Chalamet was a clear frontrunner for the Oscar before Adrien Brody ultimately won for The Brutalist.
Even without taking home an Oscar, A Complete Unknown was a certified hit. The film grossed over $127 million worldwide, and was named one of the best movies of 2024 by the National Board of Review. It earned eight nominations at the 97th Academy Awards, including Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Norton, and Best Supporting Actress for Barbaro. It also received three Golden Globe nominations, four at the SAG Awards, and six nominations at the BAFTAs. With its Hulu release, A Complete Unknown is poised to continue its legacy as one of the year’s most-talked-about films.
Our Take On A Complete Unknown’s Streaming Release Date
James Mangold’s Biopic Captures The Music, But Not the Man
A Complete Unknown is at its most compelling when the music takes center stage. Wrought by years of behind-the-scenes training, Chalamet’s Dylan comes alive with a raspy voice and childish gaunt. Yet, the film’s reluctance to pull back the curtain on Dylan himself makes for a less intimate portrayal of the enigmatic singer than what one might find in Mangold’s previous Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line.
A Complete Unknown has nonetheless garnered impressive achievements for a musical biopic with a commendable level of authenticity. If you missed it in theaters, now is the perfect time to experience the electric sound of Bob Dylan in the comfort of your home.
