Not only is Stephen King one of the most venerated working authors, but adaptations of his work have become among the most iconic horror films. Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, which adapts King’s 1977 novel of the same name, is continually cited as one of the most formative and impactful horror films of all time. The same is true of movies like Carrie. King’s non-horror novels have notable and respected adaptations, including Stand by Me and The Green Mile.
In addition to their critical acclaim, many King adaptations have become box office darlings. The 2017 adaptation of It made over $701 million worldwide, and its successor, It: Chapter Two, made a still-impressive $467.5 million. Other box office hits include The Green Mile, which made $290.7 million and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. As the list of notable King movies continues, 2025 has added another impressive тιтle, which has just crossed an important box office milestone.
The Monkey Has Pᴀssed $50 Million Globally
The Monkey Got Positive Reviews
The Monkey has pᴀssed a major worldwide box office milestone. Based on King’s short story of the same name, the adaptation tells the story of twin brothers who attempt to get rid of their family’s mysterious monkey toy after it causes a series of violent events. The Osgood Perkins-directed film features Theo James, Adam Scott, Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Elijah Wood, and Sarah Levy. The Monkey received positive reviews overall, earning a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.
ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki gave The Monkey 6 out of 10 stars, saying, “what the film has going for it is its absurdity, and there’s plenty of that.”
Per Box Office Mojo, The Monkey has now earned over $50 million worldwide, with a total of $56.1 million at the time of writing. This sum is made up of $35.2 million at the domestic box office and $20.9 million overseas. This currently puts the horror adaptation in the top 5 highest-grossing movies for the studio Neon.
What This Means For The Monkey
The Horror Movie Made Back Its Budget And Then Some
Even before this most recent milestone, The Monkey had already crossed into the top 15 highest-grossing King adaptations, cementing its success status. The movie was made on an estimated $10 million budget, so the film has already profited by a significant margin. Though this is sure to change with the onslaught of blockbuster releases coming soon, the movie is currently no. 7 at the overall box office for 2025. This bodes well for Perkins as a director, as he has another horror film coming out this year with Keeper, which was teased in The Monkey‘s end credits.
