I rewatched Avengers: Age of Ultron, and I can’t believe that one huge vibranium storyline has been forgotten by Marvel Studios in the decade since the MCU Phase 2 sequel was released. Even though Age of Ultron is considered the weakest Avengers movie in the MCU so far, the movie’s narrative had a huge impact on subsequent projects, and continues to be important to this day. Most of Age of Ultron’s loose ends and set-up plots have been resolved, but I’m still waiting for one huge story to be explored in the MCU.
Avengers: Age of Ultron, first released in April 2015, saw Earth’s Mightiest Heroes come back together to take on the тιтular tyrannical artificial intelligence, previously housed in the Mind Stone, who was let loose by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. Ultron brought the final showdown to the fictional Eastern European nation of Sokovia, hoping to use the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s homeland as a meteor to eradicate humanity and leave only metal surviving. This story evidently had some flaws, but I think one of the biggest is that a huge piece of Age of Ultron’s narrative has been ignored.
Sokovia Was Held Together By A Vibranium Core In Avengers: Age Of Ultron
Ultron Acquired Vibranium In Avengers: Age Of Ultron
Now, it’s clearly not easy to just lift an entire city up into the sky in preparation to use it as a destructive meteor, but Avengers: Age of Ultron found a way to make this possible. Soon after achieving sentience, Ultron began his obsession with vibranium, which has been depicted as the most valuable and versatile resource in the MCU since it debuted in Captain America: The First Avenger. He planned to put his consciousness inside Vision’s vibranium body, and also used the metal as a means of keeping Sokovia together during its rise into the heavens.
Ultron used vibranium acquired from Ulysses Klaue to build a machine that used magnetism to hold together a large chunk of Sokovia’s capital city and lift it skyward. When ready, a ʙuттon could be pushed to reverse the city’s direction, pushing it into the Earth and causing an extinction event that would wipe out the Avengers and humanity as a whole. The Avengers, namely Iron Man and Thor, found a way to thwart this plan, but, after rewatching the 2015 movie, I’ve now realized that there’s a huge piece of this story that’s been forgotten.
Age Of Ultron’s Vibranium Hasn’t Been Mentioned In 10 Years
A Huge Piece Of Vibranium Was Left In Sokovia In Avengers: Age Of Ultron
The conjoined efforts of Iron Man and Thor culminate in Sokovia being torn to shreds before hitting the Earth, meaning humanity is safe, but causing catastrophe for Sokovia and its residents. While most of Ultron’s meteor was broken into tiny rocks and boulders, however, the giant tube of vibranium that formed the core of the meteor did not break apart, and instead sank to the bottom of the water surrounding Sokovia’s capital city. I’m shocked this huge piece of vibranium has never been mentioned in the decade since Age of Ultron.
Ultron used an immense amount of vibranium to create Sokovia’s core and the rest of the machine holding together the city. This much vibranium would surely be hugely beneficial to any number of characters in the MCU, especially since projects such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Captain America: Brave New World have heavily featured an ongoing race for resources including the world’s governments. Sokovia’s vibranium could have been pivotal to this narrative, so I’m surprised Marvel has forgotten about it, though I think it could soon become important again.
How Could Age Of Ultron’s Vibranium Still Be Important To The MCU
Age Of Ultron’s Events Could Soon Be Addressed Again In The MCU
While this vibranium from Avengers: Age of Ultron might not have been mentioned since 2015, I think Marvel Studios’ upcoming Vision Quest series would be a fantastic place to revisit Sokovia and its new stores of vibranium. Not only did Paul Bettany’s Vision receive his own vibranium body in Age of Ultron, but James Spader has also been confirmed to be reprising his voice role of Ultron in Vision Quest. This will mark Spader’s first appearance in the MCU since Age of Ultron, which means that the events of the Phase 2 movie must be addressed.
Ultron has been voiced by Ross Marquand in several MCU projects since Avengers: Age of Ultron, including What If…? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Vision Quest will mark James Spader’s return to the role after 11 years.
I could easily see Ultron returning with the desire to still create a vibranium body for himself, which could lead him back to Sokovia to recover the lost vibranium. This would introduce a fantastic and powerful villain to the MCU who would be the perfect dark mirror to Paul Bettany’s White Vision, and would be remarkably hard to defeat. Ultron creating a new vibranium body for himself from the metal lost in Sokovia’s waters would be a full-circle moment for the villain, and would tie up one of the last loose ends from Avengers: Age of Ultron.
