Prey 2 Update Shared By Star 3 Years After Acclaimed Predator Movie

Prey 2

gets a new update from Amber Midthunder three years after the last Predator movie was released. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg and released in 2022, Prey marks the fifth film in the long-running franchise. Midthunder takes on the role of Comanche warrior Naru in the film, which chronicles the first Predator’s arrival on Earth back in 1719. The film was met with a very positive reception from audiences and critics alike, and it was a viewership hit on Hulu. This led to confirmation of a Prey 2 in early 2024.

In a recent interview with Collider, Midthunder is asked about the status of Prey 2. While the actor says that she’s not in the loop about what’s going on with the sequel, she does tease that she’s heard some “fun ideas” about the movie. Midthunder also expresses enthusiasm about returning as Naru and working with Trachtenberg once more. Check out her comment below:

“I don’t know. I don’t know what’s happening. [Laughs] I genuinely don’t. I also want to do another one. I would be happy to do another one. I love Dan Trachtenberg with my whole heart. I love that world, I love that character, and I think that there’s some fun ideas out there that I’ve heard that are very cool. I’m really excited. He obviously has Badlands coming out this year, so I’m really excited to see that. Whatever Dan does, I will always be his fan.”

When asked about what she hopes is next for Naru in the Predator universe, Midthunder says audiences will just have to wait and see:

“Well, I think we have to hope that will become real and we’ll just wait.”

What Midthunder’s Update Means For Prey 2

Dan Trachtenberg Is Currently Focused On A Different Predator Project

As Midthunder suggests, Trachtenberg’s main focus right now is the upcoming Predator: Badlands. This sci-fi film reportedly brings the franchise into the future, with Elle Fanning set to star. Badlands isn’t releasing until later this year, on November 7, and Trachtenberg will likely have his hands full with post-production work on the movie for the next few months. Still, there’s reason to be optimistic about Prey 2 eventually coming to fruition.

When Prey 2 was confirmed to be in development at 20th Century Studios in February 2024, ᴅᴇᴀᴅline reported that Midthunder was in talks to reprise her role. It’s now been more than a year since this report, and plenty could have transpired behind the scenes. Past comments from Trachtenberg suggest he has remained enthusiastic about making the movie, and he told The Playlist in 2023 that there was interest in making a sequel even while they were working on Prey:

“I can’t really say anything about that right now, but I’ll say while we were finishing the movie, we were having really exciting conversations. The studio, myself, the writer, and the producers about what crazy things could we do next. And I’ve never stopped, no one stopped thinking about how cool things could be going forward.”

Our Take On Midthunder’s Prey 2 Update

Naru Is A Character Worth Revisiting

Amber Midthunder as Naru looking up at the sky in Prey

After 2018’s The Predator marked a new low point for the franchise, Prey was a refreshing breath of fresh air. The film scaled things back, introducing a compelling new hero and making the Predator itself more terrifying and ᴅᴇᴀᴅly than ever. Prey reviews praised the film for its new direction, and it was widely hailed as the best movie in the franchise since the 1987 original. Even original Predator star Jesse Ventura was blown away, calling it a “Great, great film” in a post on social media.

Prey actually beats the original Predator movie on Rotten Tomatoes, sporting a score of 94% over the original’s 80%.

While the franchise has so far focused on new protagonists in each new installment, Naru is certainly a character worth further exploring, especially considering how the film’s ending leaves the door open for more. Trachtenberg has also proven himself a worthy shepherd of this franchise. Though more concrete news on Prey 2 may not emerge until after Badlands releases, Midthunder evidently hasn’t given up hope.
