ScreenRant‘s Coffee Chats is back for episode 2, and Novocaine star Jack Quaid is the man of the hour. Unlike most interviews, Coffee Chats sees various talents sitting down with ScreenRant host Liam Crowley for a casual and cozy conversation, reflecting on their favorite brews, moments in their career, as well as whatever new project they have coming up, all at Gumption Coffee in New York City’s Flatiron District.
After beginning with The Recruit‘s Noah Centineo, Quaid is the latest guest for Coffee Chats episode 2. The star, well-known for his roles in Prime Video’s The Boys and 2022’s Scream, is currently in the middle of promoting his new action-comedy, Novocaine, in which he stars as an unᴀssuming bank executive who uses his unique inability to feel pain in order to save a co-worker that he fell in love with from bank robbers. Also starring Prey‘s Amber Midthunder and Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s Jacob Batalon, Novocaine is garnering rave reviews from critics, currently holding an 82% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
In the new episode, Quaid, a true coffee enthusiast, learns he recognizes brewing on a deeper level than he initially thought, particularly as he discovers the secret ingredient in his cup. He then goes into explaining just how high of energy he needed to be to portray his non-traditional action hero, while also offering a cheers to his stunt team for their exceptional work on Novocaine
. Quaid also confirms his interest in making a Novocaine 2 and even says directing duo Dan Berk and Robert Olsen are already discussing ideas.
Coffee Chats no.2 w/ Jack Quaid
Coffee Plays A Heartwarming Part In His Lifestyle
As with most people in the world, Quaid acknowledges that coffee has a major role in his life, particularly as he loves “the ritual of getting” a cup of java in the mornings, even though he isn’t so much of a coffee person that he would be able to point out “That has a fruity, nutty [taste].” While he also appreciates a good coffee that is smooth and doesn’t “make me jittery“, one of the more heartwarming reasons the Novocaine actor will always try to find the time to go out and get one in order to ground himself amidst his travels:
“I love the ritual of getting coffee so much. I would prefer if I could to never actually make it at home. I just love going out to get one. And it doesn’t really matter where I go. Just that ritual of leaving my place, going to my local coffee shop… it helps me feel connected to wherever I am. I travel a lot, so it’s always usually a comic book store or a coffee shop that helps me feel connected to whatever area I’m in.”
Quaid Thinks His Stunt Team May Have “Literally Saved [His] Life”
It Also Still Amazes Him The Level Of Prep He Did To Perform His Own Stunts
While he does generally enjoy his coffee in the mornings, Quaid reflected on having gotten to the Novocaine set early every AM in order for the prosthetics and makeup effects team to cover him in “bruises and bumps and cuts“, as well as “tattoos everywhere“, which required “hours in a trailer“. During this time, rather than have his cup of coffee, Quaid would instead try and “sleep through some of it“, saving his energy for when he was able to get on set.
From there, he would, “have a coffee to start getting me awake,” followed by, “another cup of coffee once I was done with everything there to get me into work mode.” The coffee wasn’t his only means of preparation for filming, however, as he had multiple nutritionists on set who were “monitoring what I was [intaking]” to help him “be in really good shape for this” and keep him on “a pretty strict diet“.
One little trick he did have, tying back to what kicked the conversation off — a delicious cup of coffee — was his inclusion of turmeric and black pepper into his coffee, which he acknowledges “sounds kind of odd“, but actually provided an “anti-inflammatory” benefit for his stunt scenes. Before others rush to follow in his footsteps, though, Quaid does warn that it “yellows your teeth really fast“.
While the coffee did help with his stuntwork in the film, Quaid was quick to raise his glᴀss to Novocaine‘s stunt team, particularly his double, Hristo Dimitrov, who he humorously reflects on having “literally saved my life” during production. That said, Quaid did confirm he did “as many of my own stunts as possible” on the movie, and consistently reflected on his feelings that he was “doing something crazy” every day, including “hanging upside down“, “taking these hits” and “flying across the space of the room.”
Quaid Is Ready For Novocaine 2
He’s Also Already Had Talks With Directors Dan Berk & Robert Olsen
Without outright spoiling the first Novocaine‘s ending, we did express our hopes for a sequel to further expand the movie’s world and continue the growth of his central character, Nathan Caine. Quaid was quick to agree he “would love” to get to make a Novocaine 2, not only confirming he has “so many ideas” about where a follow-up could go, but that directing duo Dan Berk and Robert Olsen also have numerous ideas, and for now, they’ll have to “pray to the movie gods to make that happen.”
More About ScreenRant’s Coffee Chats
Coffee Chats operates as a mixture of personal discussion through the lens of coffee as well as a dive into the guest’s latest project. Along the way, we’ll hit a Cold Brew Open, give our First Sip Synopsis, discuss our personal Coffee Callbacks, share our dream Desert Island Drinks and more.
“I pride myself on being a conversationalist, and there’s no better setting to chat it up with someone than a cafe,” ScreenRant Reporter, Host Liam Crowley said. “Back when I attended Syracuse University, I used to make ‘coffee review’ videos with my friends on my social media. To essentially expand that 60-second concept into a full-blown production and be accompanied by some of the biggest names in Hollywood is a true ‘pinch me’ moment.“
“From the moment I reached out to Liam about joining ScreenRant’s New York team, we envisioned expanding our content offerings with engaging, in-depth interviews, including an original series,” ScreenRant Editorial, Branding, and PR Director Rob Keyes said. “Liam already had an idea for this, and Coffee Chats perfectly embodies this vision, offering a unique format that connects audiences with leading industry talent while supporting local businesses. We are thrilled to launch this series and collaborate with local establishments on this exciting initiative.”
“Over the past 21 years, ScreenRant has interviewed every star in Hollywood several times,” ScreenRant Content Director Alex Leadbeater said. “Across press junkets, red carpets, convention panels and beyond, we’ve been a constant presence in the entertainment industry. Coffee Chats builds upon this success to create a more intimate backdrop for a more personal, longer-form style of interview.“
Coffee Chats is created by Crowley, Keyes, and Leadbeater and is produced by Tiffany Loving, Laura Watson, and Jacques Reeder.
