Robert De Niro’s New Movie Is What I’ve Been Waiting 6 Years For After The Irishman

One of the most acclaimed and beloved actors of all time, Robert De Niro, is coming out with a new film in just a few months, The Alto Knights, which will tell the story of notorious American mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. De Niro’s dual starring roles in the film would be exciting in and of itself, as he has proven himself to be an acting force no matter what project he is in, but the upcoming movie marks his return to the genre that he is perhaps best known for.

There have been plenty of gangster movies throughout the course of cinematic history, but many of the most iconic and beloved films in the genre have Robert De Niro as one of the main stars. From Goodfellas to The Godfather Part II, De Niro has become one of the most beloved gangster movie actors of all time, and The Alto Knights marks his return to the genre once again, this time not just playing one character, but actually taking on both leading roles at once.

The Alto Knights Is Robert De Niro’s First Gangster Movie Since The Irishman

The Alto Knights Marks His Return To The Gangster Genre

The last time De Niro appeared in a gangster movie was in 2019’s The Irishman, one in a long series of collaborations between the actor and acclaimed director Martin Scorsese. The film was critically acclaimed, earning 10 Oscar nominations, and although it didn’t end up winning any, it was another addition to Robert De Niro’s legacy as one of the biggest faces of the genre. He has starred in a number of other projects since then, but The Alto Knights will hopefully be his triumphant return to gangster film.

The Alto Knights is set to release in theaters on March 25, 2025.

De Niro did reunite with Scorsese in 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which was a vaguely gangster-eque film, but it wasn’t the same kind of classic New York gangster fare that he had become famous for. That was obviously a great film, certainly De Niro’s biggest movie in between The Irishman and The Alto Knights, and he gave an excellent performance, but it will be very exciting to see him back in his more traditional gangster role, taking on The Alto Knight‘s true story.

Robert De Niro Traditionally Does Some Of His Best Work In Gangster Movies

De Niro Is Best Known For His Many Iconic Gangster Roles

Plenty of De Niro’s most iconic roles have been in gangster movies, and with him playing both Vito Genovese and Frank Corleone in The Alto Knights, his performance is sure to be a highlight of the upcoming film. The director, Barry Levinson, worked with De Niro previously on Wag the Dog, and the writer, Nicolas Pileggi, was one of the co-writers of Goodfellas, so chances are that De Niro will bring his best to the role once again, and The Alto Knights will become a great addition to his filmography.
