Roman-era statues of Aphrodite and Dionysus unearthed in Turkey.
Archaeologists have discovered statues representing Aphrodite and Dionysus in the ancient city of Aizanoi. According to Greek mythology, the deities Aphrodite and Dionysus had a grand love affair. The statue heads were found at the bottom of a creek bed, but archaeologists note they found the bodies during a previous dig – it is not known how the heads and bodies were separated.
Aizanoi has been occupied since the Bronze Age, emerging in the Hellenistic period as an important political and economic centre. In 133 BC, the city was bequeathed to Rome, becoming part of the Roman province of Phrygia Pacatiana.
