SpongeBob SquarePants’ New Movie Highlights One Of The Most Underrated (& Underused) Elements Of The TV Show

The newest entry in the SpongeBob SquarePants movie series is Plankton: The Movie, and it highlights one of the most underrated and underused elements of the TV show – and it’s not Plankton. As SpongeBob SquarePants continues to reign on TV with 15 seasons and surely more in the near future, the franchise keeps expanding. Aside from the main TV show, SpongeBob SquarePants’ most popular branch is its movies, out of which two are spinoffs. Falling into the latter category is Plankton: The Movie, which focuses on the тιтle character.

Plankton: The Movie follows Plankton (voiced by Mr. Lawrence) as he teams up with SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) to stop his computer wife, Karen (Jill Talley), after she goes rogue. Thanks to this, the movie explores Plankton and Karen’s backstory, while also addressing important topics through their less-than-ideal relationship. Despite being focused on Plankton, the movie features the show’s most popular main characters, though not all of them are given the same amount of screen time – thanks to this, however, it highlights one of the best but most underused elements of the TV show.

Plankton: The Movie Gives More Time To The Gal Pals

The Gal Pals Appear To Help Karen

Plankton: The Movie shares the spotlight between Plankton and Karen, and thanks to the latter, the Gal Pals make an appearance – and they are actually given a role in the story. The Gal Pals is the friendship between the four main female characters in SpongeBob SquarePants: Karen, Sandy, Mrs. Puff, and Pearl. The Gal Pals were formed in season 11’s episode “Girls’ Night Out”, where Sandy calls Mrs. Puff and Karen to have a night out together after a stressful week. After sharing how annoying SpongeBob and Plankton are to them, they decide to prank both.

The Gal Pals appeared again in season 12’s episode “A Cabin in the Kelp”, in which Pearl officially joined the group. In it, the Gal Pals go to a cabin in the woods, where a prank planned by Pearl and SpongeBob takes a turn. Plankton: The Movie is the third appearance of the Gal Pals in the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, and they have a minor but very important role in the story. It’s thanks to them that Plankton begins to see how badly he has treated Karen for years, as they tell him how much Karen complains about him.

Even though Karen has gone rogue and wants to take over the world, the Gal Pals are still on her side, and they fight her other selves to save their friend.

The Gal Pals later join SpongeBob and Plankton to infiltrate Karen’s airship, where they fight Karen’s other selves – smart Karen, evil Karen, and snarky Karen. Even though Karen has gone rogue and wants to take over the world, the Gal Pals are still on her side, and they fight her other selves to save their friend – in short, they do it for her, not for Plankton.

Why The Gal Pals Deserve More Time In SpongeBob SquarePants

The Gal Pals Is One Of The Best Parts Of SpongeBob SquarePants

As seen above, the Gal Pals have only appeared in the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise three times: twice on the show and once in a movie. The Gal Pals have been around since 2018, and yet the show has mostly left them aside. Surely, the show’s main character is and will always be SpongeBob SquarePants, and the main focus will always be him and his relationships with other characters, but the show needed the addition of the Gal Pals.

Plankton: The Movie further proved the importance of the Gal Pals in the world of SpongeBob SquarePants.

The Gal Pals are a different type of friendship from that between SpongeBob and Patrick, as it’s a more supportive group, but they still have fun pranking others (mostly those who have been annoying them for a long time). Plankton: The Movie further proved the importance of the Gal Pals in the world of SpongeBob SquarePants, so here’s to hoping that future seasons of the show will see more of them.
