Jason Momoa’s next movie, A Minecraft Movie, could be a major hit at the box office, but I think it will continue a disappointing Rotten Tomatoes streak for the actor. Momoa leads the cast of A Minecraft Movie as Greg “The Garbage Man” Garrison, who is one of four people transported to the world of Minecraft. Greg is joined by Natalie, Dawn, and Henry, and the four of them must work together to find a way out of the strange world. Eventually, they meet Steve, who teaches them how to survive and thrive in the world.
In addition to Momoa, the upcoming Minecraft film also stars Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. The trailer for A Minecraft Movie makes the film look very entertaining and ᴀssures me that it will be a major success at the box office. However, I am not confident that critics will like A Minecraft Movie that much. If this is the case, then A Minecraft Movie will continue an unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes streak for Momoa.
Minecraft Looks Like Another Jason Momoa Movie That Will Get Bad Reviews
A Minecraft Movie Looks Fun But Not Necessarily Good
Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, and a movie has been in development since 2014. Therefore, I’m excited that a Minecraft movie is finally being released. However, based on the trailers for the film, I’m not at all confident that it will get good reviews. A Minecraft Movie looks like a fun adventure film about Gary, Steve, and the other characters fighting off monsters from the Nether, but it doesn’t strike me as a movie that will win over a lot of critics.
I actually think A Minecraft Movie will receive a similar reception as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which came out in 2023. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge box office success and was loved by most audiences, but was frowned upon by a lot of critics. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has a “Rotten” score of 59% on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes). Therefore, if A Minecraft Movie is received in a similar fashion, it will also likely end up with a Rotten score.
Jason Momoa Is In The Midst Of His 2nd Longest Rotten Streak On Rotten Tomatoes
Momoa’s Recent Movies Haven’t Been Liked By Critics
If A Minecraft Movie does receive a Rotten score, it will continue the second-worst streak of Momoa’s career. His last four movies, these being Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Fast X, The Last Manhunt, and Slumberland, all have Rotten scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Therefore, if A Minecraft Movie is received by critics as I think it will be, it would be Momoa’s fifth Rotten movie in a row.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) |

Slumberland (2022) |

In terms of movies, Momoa hasn’t been able to win over critics on many occasions. Some of his films, such as Denis Villeneuve’s first Dune movie and Braven, have been well-received. However, the majority of his movies have Rotten scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Momoa is a very entertaining and charismatic actor, so it would be disappointing if A Minecraft Movie continues his current streak. But based on all the trailers for the film, I unfortunately don’t have a lot of faith in A Minecraft Movie.
Jason Momoa’s Worst Rotten Tomatoes Streak Ended In 2018
A Lot Of Momoa’s Movies Have Rotten Scores
On the bright side, this isn’t the worst streak of Momoa’s career. Therefore, the actor still has time to turn things around. The worst streak of Momoa’s career actually began in 2011, not long after he received immense acclaim for portraying Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones season 1. This streak began with 2011’s Conan the Barbarian and ended with 2017’s Justice League. During this time, Momoa shockingly didn’t star in one movie that received a Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Conan the Barbarian (2011) |

Bullet to the Head (2012) |

Once Upon a Time in Venice (2017) |

Justice League (2017) |

During this streak, Momoa starred in eight movies that have Rotten scores on the review aggregator website. Even though he turned things around with Braven and the first Aquaman movie, Momoa’s career is trending downwards again. Hopefully some of Momoa’s upcoming movies will be received better than his last four. In the next few years, Momoa will appear in Fast & Furious 11, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and several non-franchise movies. Therefore, after A Minecraft Movie, I hope some of Momoa’s movies get higher ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.
