“Greatest Experience Of Watching A Film In Years”: Sinners Gets Early Review From Spike Lee, And He Can’t Believe What He Just Saw

Spike Lee offers his awestruck reaction to Sinners. Directed by Black Panther and Creed helmer Ryan Coogler, Sinners is an upcoming supernatural period piece about two brothers who return to their hometown and discover a horror afoot. Sinners features a leading cast including Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O’Connell, Lola Kirke, Delroy Lindo, and Theodus Crane. After some release date shuffling with Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, Coogler’s film is now set to hit theaters on Friday, April 18.

Speaking on Instagram, Lee offers his review of Sinners. Lee explains that Coogler invited him to watch Sinners in a premiere screening in IMAX. Reflecting on his experience, Lee says “I Just Had The Greatest Experience Of Watching A Film In Years.” He goes on to praise specific aspects of Sinners, including the performances, shouting out Jordan specifically, the cinematography, the score, the costume design, and more. He elaborates “AND DAT’S DA BLACK CINEMATIC POWER,TRUTH,RUTH.

What This Means For Sinners

Things Are Looking Good For Sinners

Michael B Jordan's Elijah aims a tommy gun at the camera in Sinners 2025

Sinners is one of the most highly-anticipated movies of the year, and Lee’s tease only adds to the hype. Directing Do the Right Thing, BlacKkKlansman, and more, Lee is one of the most highly-regarded directors of all time. He is also considered a pioneer of Black cinema, as his films tend to focus heavily on the experiences and socioeconomic implications of being a Black person in America. For this reason, Lee’s likening of Sinners to “black cinematic power” holds particular weight, as Lee himself has been incredibly influential in this regard.

While Sinners has not yet been widely seen by critics and thus does not have a Rotten Tomatoes score, other recent reports have shone a positive light on the film. Just this week, an early box office tracking report from Puck revealed that the supernatural horror movie could bring in high box office numbers. The movie had an Awareness score of 29 and an Interest score of 45, which are good numbers for an original, non-franchise movie. Between this early data and Lee’s tease, Sinners could be shaping up to be a successful release for Coogler.

Our Take On Lee’s Sinners Review

Coogler’s Return To Non-Franchise Work Is Exciting

The Sinners trailers have already suggested that the movie will be a wild ride, and Lee’s statement only instills me with more confidence in this regard. Coogler has previously dedicated a lot of his career to major franchises, including the Rocky franchise and the MCU through his work on the Black Panther films. Loving his work on Fruitvale Station from over a decade ago, I was excited about Sinners as a standalone, original Coogler film to begin with, and Lee’s rave review only builds that hype.
