“Marvel Fired You”: Jonathan Majors Reveals How He Learned He Was Fired By Marvel Studios As He Addresses MCU Exit

Jonathan Majors has addressed being fired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe after he was convicted of misdemeanor third-degree ᴀssault and second-degree harᴀssment of his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Majors played Kang the Conqueror and all of his character’s multiverse variants. Kang was set to be the main villain of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty then being the next film for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. However, Major was fired by Marvel Studios after being convicted of ᴀssaulting and harᴀssing his ex-girlfriend. He was sentenced to complete 52 weeks of a domestic violence intervention program in addition to probation.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Kang the Conqueror actor Jonathan Majors revealed how he learned that Marvel had fired him. The information came from a member of his legal team as Majors entered his car following his sentencing in December 2023. As soon as the actor was convicted, Marvel Studios fired Majors, which later led to Kang being scrapped from the MCU’s slate of projects in favor of Doctor Doom taking over. Now, Majors claims he is taking meetings for a new superhero film project, though not at Marvel or DC. Check out the full quote below:

About Marvel firing him: “He goes, ‘I’m just gonna tell you now. That way you’re not surprised, and you can start processing it. They fired you. Marvel fired you.’”

About reading scripts and taking meetings that include a new superhero film project: “No relation to the big guys, DC or Marvel, but a pretty wicked story. I’m glad to be reading. Sometimes it feels like it’s not going to happen [about his career resurgence]. And sometimes it feels like we start next week.”

What Jonathan Majors’ MCU Firing Comments Mean

The Kang The Conqueror Actor Is Finding Superhero Work Elsewhere

It was already known that Marvel fired Majors the day he was convicted. However, Majors’ comments now serve to clarify what that timeline looked like. The actor had just got out of court when he was told the news that he was out of the MCU. A month before he was fired, Marvel had hired Loki creator Michael Waldron to work on a new draft of the Avengers 5 script, which was initially Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Based on the timeline, Marvel had likely already made a decision regarding Majors and was waiting for his possible conviction to announce it.

The MCU has since moved on from not only Majors, but Kang the Conqueror and all his variants. The new villain of the next two Avengers movies is Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was reтιтled, now becoming Avengers: Doomsday. Majors’ conviction has led to his career slowing down immensely. However, as the actor notes, he is starting to work towards a return. That seemingly includes the Kang star coming back to the superhero genre. Though, with Marvel and DC not part of the plan, it remains to be seen which franchise that could be.

Our Take On Jonathan Majors’ MCU Firing Comments

Kang the Conqueror threatening Ant-Man and his group in Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania

Given how high-profile the case was and how Marvel had a lot riding on Majors’ Kang the Conqueror, I understand why the call to fire him was made as soon as the conviction was announced, with Majors revealing he learned about it as soon as he got to his car. Marvel simply could not have him anymore as the face of the Multiverse Saga, which I think is easy to understand. I’m intrigued by what “wicked” superhero project the actor is looking at outside Marvel and DC as Jonathan Majors‘ new career path outside the MCU begins.
