Avengers: Doomsday’s Mᴀssive Pre-Production Cost Is Already Reportedly Triple What Disney Spent On One Of Marvel’s Biggest Box Office Bombs

According to a new MCU report, Avengers: Doomsday‘s pre-production costs have already tripled those of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and they’re expected to keep rising. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has been one of the biggest box office bombs in the MCU’s history, partly because it only gathered $476 million worldwide, but also in part because Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s budget reached a staggering $388 million. Naturally, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are expected to have the biggest budget in the MCU’s entire Multiverse Saga, but the actual numbers may still exceed expectations.

As reported by Forbes, Marvel’s financial statements at Avengers: Doomsday‘s current stage of pre-production reflect three times the amount of money spent on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania at a similar point. So far, Marvel Studios has reportedly spent $8 million on Avengers: Doomsday, whereas the studio had only spent $2.5 million on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, around ten months into its pre-production. Marvel’s reported monthly spending on Avengers: Doomsday doubles that of the Ant-Man threequel: $531,919 against $251,165.

What The Avengers: Doomsday Pre-Production Cost Report Means

Avengers: Doomsday Might Break MCU Budget Records

Avengers Endgame vs Secret Wars

Avengers: Doomsday‘s pre-production costs put the Phase 6 crossover movie’s full budget on track to surpᴀss Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s $388 million budget and become the most expensive MCU movie to date. Unlike Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars won’t be filmed back to back. However, their budgets serve as a good point of reference. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame cost $800 million to $1 billion to make, meaning that Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars could cost up to $2 billion in total.

With Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame being a strong reference point, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars should break the $4.8 billion mark to be considered on par with the Infinity Saga’s two-part ending at the box office. Avengers: Infinity War grossed $2.048 billion, and Avengers: Endgame grossed $2.748 billion. If Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars do cost considerably more to make, the bar should be expected to rise even further.

Our Take On The Avengers: Doomsday Pre-Production Cost Report

Avengers: Doomsday’s Projected Budget Presents A Challenge For The MCU

The MCU’s box office hasn’t recovered since it took a downward turn in Phase 4. Phase 4 installments such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Black Widow remain at the very bottom of the MCU’s box office rankings, and Phase 5 movies such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels failed to fare any better. Captain America: Brave New World is also struggling to climb up the rankings. If Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars’ budget is higher than Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, they have little chance of achieving proportionately higher box office results.
