I’m Glad The MCU Changed Adamantium’s Origin Story

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally introduced Adamantium in Captain America: Brave New World, and I can’t help but think their new origin for the famous metal may be even more exciting than its comic book roots. The MCU’s approach of having Adamantium mined from a Celestial was an interesting choice in the plot machinations of Captain America 4. However, it is what this suggests for the future, and where the franchise may take this story, that make this even more exciting than initially apparent.

Marvel needs to introduce the X-Men to their franchise. With Sadie Sink playing a mystery character in Spider-Man 4 – cast so recently after she was rumored to be up for the role of Jean Grey – it seems audiences may see these characters sooner than expected. Given many major mutants are linked to the story of Adamantium – most famously Wolverine – the decision to have Adamantium debut at this time feels all the more notable, and the details concerning certain changes make this story even more interesting.

The MCU Adamantium Origin Story Makes Sure It Gets A Suitably Grand Entrance

The Metal Came To The MCU In Eternals

In Marvel Comics, Adamantium is a human-made alloy. In the MCU, however, Marvel’s plans for Weapon X may have to be adjusted to a new setup, as the metal has been mined from a Celestial. Rather than being put together in a lab, the ending of Eternals saw Tiamut emerging from the Indian Ocean, and being calcified there. His transformed body has been stuck since, and Brave New World saw pieces of it being mined to use as an incredible resource.

Adamantium is stronger than even Vibranium in the comics, which has set up an exciting new arms race in the franchise. With links to Celestial beings and the Eternals, Adamantium in the MCU is set to be an even greater and more significant force in upcoming stories. Whether this quickly plays into stories of Wolverine, or whether the franchise decides to go in a new and unexpected direction, this is an interesting and compelling choice, and I can’t wait to see what comes next for Adamantium.

The MCU’s Adamantium Origin Avoids The Slower Aspects Of The Comics

The Comic Story Of Adamantium Occurred Over Many, Many Years

The story of Adamantium in the comics is long, and seems mostly interchangeable with how Vibranium has been used in the MCU. In the comics, Adamantium was developed for Captain America’s shield, and then became a problem when it was used in the construction of Ultron. From there, Adamantium’s Marvel story slowed down, with the metal becoming most important during the Weapon X stories concerning Wolverine. These were slow stories, and took many years to tell, but the eventual result of them was excellent.

Generally made from steel, Vibranium, and an unknown third catalyst, Adamantium in the comics is interesting, but not nearly as exciting as making it part of the body of a Celestial. In the comics, Adamantium is restricted by materials and cost, as the fusing of the metals to create the alloy is an expensive and complex procedure. Still, this can make it difficult to convey exactly how rare and valuable the metal is. Having a much more limited resource in the films helps to communicate the metal’s value and scarcity.

The MCU Could Still Adapt The Original Story In The Franchise

A Weapon X Story Is Set To Occur

Having a scientific basis and including stories of integrating the new metal with technology for Adamantium is still possible in the MCU. While the metal has clearly become a valuable resource after Brave New World, the actual use of and experimentation with Adamantium remain to be seen, although a Weapon X future is confirmed. Wielding the material, and using it to craft skeletal covers and shields, is a complicated process, and will require the introduction of new characters and places to convey these stories.

Even the melting and setting of Adamantium have been difficult and important components of the source comic books. Leading into a Weapon X storyline with William Stryker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is likely the next logical step, which will no doubt require the use of certain comic plot details. With the introduction of mutants to the MCU, the political and governmental machinations that go against them must also be established in order to tell X-Men stories. Adamantium will almost certainly play into that, and I can’t wait to see how the story is adjusted for the franchise.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made some great choices concerning Adamantium. The metal in the comics is too famous to avoid using, but its comic source material didn’t deviate strongly enough from how Vibranium has been used in the films. Having a connection to the Celestial makes sense not just for the story, but also because it helps Eternals to feel more vital to the franchise. The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks bright, and I can’t wait to see where Adamantium appears next.
