Babygirl‘s streaming release date has been revealed after its Oscars snub. Written and directed by Halina Reijn, previously known for A24’s Bodies Bodies Bodies, A24’s erotic thriller stars Nicole Kidman as a powerful CEO who puts her career and family life on the line when she begins a torrid affair with a significantly younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson (A24’s The Iron Claw). Babygirl‘s cast also includes Antonio Banderas as her husband, Sophie Wilde (A24’s Talk to Me) as her ᴀssistant, and Esther McGregor.

It will also air on HBO on Saturday, April 26 at 8:00 p.m. ET. The movie has been available to rent or buy on digital platforms since January 28. What Babygirl’s Streaming Release Date Means For The Movie

One Of The Biggest Oscar Snubs Is Coming To Streaming

With the latest awards season having ended, Babygirl was widely seen as one of the biggest Oscar snubs of the year, specifically Nicole Kidman’s performance. Babygirl reviews have widely praised Kidman and Harris Dickinson for delivering strikingly intense performances, while writer-director Halina Reijn’s sharp and detached style ensures that the Sєxually candid thriller remains more cerebral than indulgent. As a result, many feel that the A24 film, and especially Kidman, didn’t receive the recognition they deserved at the 97th Academy Awards.

In August 2024, Babygirl premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Nicole Kidman won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. Additionally, Babygirl was named one of the best movies of 2024 by the National Board of Review, which also awarded Kidman their Best Actress prize. She went on to receive a nomination at the Golden Globes for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, losing out to Fernanda Torres for I’m Still Here, but Kidman was snubbed at the Academy Awards, with Babygirl also being shut out entirely.

Babygirl was a box office success, making over $63 million against its $20 million budget, becoming one of A24’s top 10 highest-grossing movies.

Our Take On Babygirl’s Streaming Release Date

Adjust Your Expectations

For those planning to watch the movie on Max, it would be best to adjust your expectations. While Babygirl appears to be a throwback erotic thriller in the style of Basic Instinct or Fatal Attraction, it ends up being much more thought-provoking than indulgent. This is likely why many viewers were disappointed, indicated by its 48% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Babygirl is an A24 movie from Halina Reijn, who made the genre-bending Bodies Bodies Bodies, which should have been a pretty good indication that it would push boundaries with its storytelling, instead of simply retreading genre classics of the past.
