Gerard Butler’s $74.5 Million Action Thriller Tops Streaming Charts 2 Years Later

Though his work is wide-ranging, a huge part of Gerard Butler‘s career has revolved around action films. After appearing in a period piece for his debut film, he played a supporting role in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997. Since then, he has been in multiple other action movies, including Olympus Has Fallen and Kandahar. Some of his action films have fallen into the climate survival subgenre, including both Greenland and Geostorm, the former of which has a sequel, Greenland: Migration, scheduled for this year.

One of Butler’s biggest action franchises as a leading star is the Den of Thieves movies. Most recently, the franchise saw the release of its second installment, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. The movie grossed $56.7 million worldwide, making it the no. 5 highest-grossing movie of the year so far. Pantera received decent reviews, which was positive enough to warrant the development of a third film. Now, another one of Butler’s action movies is succeeding in streaming two years later.

Plane Is Soaring High On Streaming

The Movie Was Well-Received

Plane is now doing well on streaming. In the 2023 action movie, Butler plays a pilot who is unexpectedly caught in a war zone when he is forced to land his plane during a storm. The main cast also includes Mike Colter, Tony Goldwyn, Yoson An, Lilly Krug, Mike Colter, and Evan Dane Taylor. Plane got fairly positive reviews, getting a 79% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and a 94% Popcornmeter. The film also did fairly well in theaters, making $74.5 million worldwide.

Per FlixPatrol, Plane has made it to no. 1 on the Peacock top 10 movies charts today, March 13. To achieve this feat, it beat out the films The Wild Robot, Sing 2, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, The Equalizer 2, Conclave, Nosferatu, Hitpig!, Spy, and Just Go With It.

Our Take On Plane’s Streaming Success

Butler Has Another Streaming Release Coming Up

Plane has Butler to thank, both for its initial success and streaming resurgence. The streaming release date of Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is also approaching, as the film arrives on Netflix on March 20. Based on the streaming success of Plane, this film is also likely to succeed at home, gaining momentum as more people watch Butler’s movies on Peacock and other platforms. In turn, this may spur even further interest in Butler, and we might see a trend of more of his films popping up on the streaming charts in the coming weeks.
