Even though Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully has been the main character of the first two Avatar movies, I think it’s highly likely he will meet his end in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Even though he is not a native Na’vi, the first Avatar movie saw Jake embrace the culture of the alien species and form a loving relationship with Neytiri. Their love for each other is evident in Avatar: The Way of Water, but it is put to the test more than ever since they have four children in the sequel.

While integrating into other Na’vi clans and fighting the Resources Development Administration (RDA), Jake and Neytiri have to not only protect themselves, but also their children. Their family faced tragedy in the most recent film, as their oldest son, Neteyam, died at the end of Avatar: The Way of Water. While the Na’vi won the battle at the end of the second film, they will face even more danger in the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash. Based on a recent James Cameron tease, I am confident that Jake will tragically die in the third Avatar movie.

Jake Sully’s Death In Avatar: Fire And Ash Would Be Tragic

Since Spider saved Quaritch from drowning in The Way of Water, he could continue his quest for revenge in Avatar: Fire and Blood. He has had a rivalry with Jake for two movies, so it would make sense for them to have another showdown in the third film. Furthermore, Fire and Ash is going to introduce two new Na’vi clans, one of which will be villainous. Therefore, while the direction that the upcoming movie is going to take is currently unknown, Cameron admitted that his wife cried for four hours after watching Avatar: Fire and Ash. He said:

My wife watched the whole thing from end to end — she had kept herself away from it and I wasn’t showing her bits and pieces as we went along. This was December 22nd. She bawled for four hours. She kept trying to get her sh*t back together so she could tell me specific reactions, and then she’d just tear up and start crying again. Finally, I’m like, ‘Honey, I’ve got to go to bed. Sorry, we’ll talk about it some other time.’ She’s a pretty good bellwether. She called the ball on тιтanic and Avatar and Avatar 2. So I trust her heart on it.

This extreme reaction from Cameron’s wife makes it obvious that something tragic is going to happen in Avatar: Fire and Ash. While it is possible that Jake and Neytiri could lose another child, I think it is much more likely that Jake will be killed in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Based on the ending of The Way of Water and the story details for Avatar 3, Jake could die at the hands of Quaritch or be killed by a member of the villainous Fire Clan.

If Jake does die in Avatar: Fire and Ash, it will undeniably be incredibly sad. He has had so much development over the last two Avatar movies, and after the death of Neteyam in The Way of Water, I want nothing more than him and his family to be happy. However, that is not realistic, as Fire and Ash will likely raise the stakes of the franchise even more. Therefore, I would not be surprised if ongoing battles with the RDA and the introduction of new Na’vi clans leads to Jake’s death.

While Jake is the main character of the Avatar franchise, the series can definitely continue without him. After all, The Way of Water already established that Lo’ak could be the series’ new main character. Cameron has revealed that Lo’ak will replace Jake as the narrator for Fire and Ash, so it seems like the upcoming film will further establish him as the new main character. Even though Jake Sully’s potential death in Avatar: Fire and Ash is sad to think about, the series is still in good hands with Lo’ak and the other members of his family.
