Jake Gyllenhaal’s $100M Sci-Fi Movie Is Succeeding On Streaming 8 Years Later

Jake Gyllenhall has had a fair number of hits in his career. His highest-grossing movie as an actor is Spider-Man: Far From Home, wherein he played the villain, Mysterio. This film is the actor’s only movie to gross over $1 billion, coming in at $1.13 billion. Beyond his MCU stint, however, Gyllenhaal has had a number of other successful тιтles. The disaster thriller The Day After Tomorrow, for example, made over $555 million at the box office, and 2010’s Prince of Persia: Sands of Time brought in $336.3 million.

Gyllenhaal has also starred in several dramas by award-winning directors. This includes Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain, which earned the actor his first and only Oscar nomination. He has also worked with Bong Joon Ho on Okja, where he played the wacky Dr. Johnny Wilcox. Gyllenhaal has also been nominated for three Golden Globes for the movies Love & Other Drugs and Nightcrawler and the TV show Presumed Innocent. Now, one of Gyllenhaal’s more mixed-reviewed films is doing well on streaming years later.

Life Had A $58 Million Budget

Life is now doing well on the streaming charts. The 2017 sci-fi thriller saw Gyllenhaal play David Jordan, a member of a team of scientists who, while working on the International Space Station, discovers a rapidly evolving creature that threatens life on Earth. The movie received mixed reviews at the time of its release, getting a 68% Tomatometer and 55% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. Life managed to gross just over $100 million, which, while respectable, was not quite enough to comfortably make back its estimated $58 million budget.

Eight years after releasing in theaters, Life is doing well on streaming. As per FlixPatrol, the movie came in at no. 4 on the top 10 movies in the United States chart today, March 12. In addition to its position on the movies chart, it also holds a spot on the top 10 overall chart, taking the no. 9 position.

Our Take On Life’s Years-Delayed Streaming Success

Life’s Success Is Good For Jake Gyllenhaal

It is unclear exactly why Life is a streaming hit nearly a decade later, but Gyllenhaal has been in the news. The actor is currently taking to the stage to play Iago in a limited-run production of Othello on Broadway, which stars Oscar-winner Denzel Washington. The play recently set a record for being the highest-grossing Broadway play run in history, which might make audiences more aware of Gyllenhaal‘s name. However this success came to be, it could be good news for Gyllenhaal’s career momentum, as he has two movies coming out soon with The Bride and In The Grey.
