2024 was a strange year at the box office. Things started off slowly, with February seeing Argylle flop. Things picked up in March, however, upon the release of the anticipated sci-fi sequel Dune: Part Two. The Denis Villeneuve-directed adaptation ended up grossing over $714 million, becoming the sixth-highest grossing film of the year. It was an especially good year for animation, with three of the year’s top 5 movies being PG-rated animated films. This included Inside Out 2, whose $1.69 million gross made it the highest-grossing film of 2024.
Amidst all the wins, there were a series of films that did not achieve the level of box-office glory that they hoped for. Spring 2024 saw the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The prequel follow-up to the $380 million hit Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa had high hopes, but ended up with a disappointing $174.1 million total. Even Gladiator II underperformed some projections, making $462.1 million while its direct release weekend compeтιтor, Wicked, brought in over $733 million. Now, another one of 2024’s box office misses is finding its redemption on streaming.
Better Man Is Now A Streaming Hit
Better Man Bombed At The Box Office
Better Man is now doing well on streaming. The film is a biopic of British musician Robbie Williams that made the bold choice of portraying the celebrity as a CGI monkey. While Better Man received decent reviews, it bombed at the box office, making just $20.3 million. The movie’s estimated budget was around $110 million, so it ended up losing millions of dollars. The film did go on, however, to get an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects, though it ended up losing out to Best Picture nominee Dune: Part Two.
Per FlixPatrol, Better Man is now a streaming hit. The film is no. 2 on the Paramount+ top 10 movies in the United States today, March 12. This comes after the Williams biopic debuted on the platform on March 11. Now, it falls behind only Gladiator II on the charts, but beat out big тιтles such as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Top Gun: Maverick.
Our Take On Better Man’s Streaming Success
Better Man Came Out During A Compeтιтive Awards Season Time
Better Man‘s instant streaming success on the United States charts could not be more opposite to its track record in theaters. Though its gross was small overall, the movie did particularly poorly at the domestic level, making just under $2 million. That said, it came out during a compeтιтive time when a lot of more high-caliber Oscar nominees were in theaters or being re-released. As such, it makes sense why Better Man might still be able to have a streaming life even if people did not choose it in theaters.
