Although Taylor Sheridan is best-known for TV series like Yellowstone and Landman, the director is gaining a different kind of attention on Netflix with his 2015 movie, Sicario, which may finally get its long-awaited sequel. Since the 1990s, Sheridan has embedded himself in the entertainment industry with minor roles in shows like Walker, Texas Ranger and NYPD Blue. In the 2010s, Sheridan began leading his own projects as both a director and a writer, leading to his current domination of television with series like Landman and Yellowstone. Yet, these aren’t all of Sheridan’s greatest works.
Aside from his growing resume of hit TV series, Sheridan has been behind some truly fantastic movies. In 2016, he wrote the critically acclaimed neo-Western, Hell or High Water, starring Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, and Ben Foster. The following year, he wrote and directed Wind River, yet another neo-Western hit that follows Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen as detectives investigating a murder on a reservation. However, one Sheridan movie that truly stands out among the pack is Sicario, which is currently at the top of Netflix’s Top 10 movies, and for good reason.
Taylor Sheridan’s Sicario Trending On Netflix Is A Reminder Sicario 3 Should Still Happen
Why Sicario 3 Has Taken So Long
2015’s Sicario is an action crime thriller which centers on Kate Macer, an FBI agent who joins a special task force dedicated to taking out a cartel boss at the U.S.-Mexico border. Alongside new, mysterious colleagues, Kate must use her hard-earned skills in the war on drugs. Sicario got plenty of attention upon its release 10 years ago, but now that the movie is streaming on Netflix, it is once again gaining momentum. More than anything, this renewed interest in Sicario is a sign that the franchise should pick up where it left off with Sicario 3.
After the success of Sicario in 2015, the franchise continued in 2018 with Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Although director Denis Villeneuve and lead actress Emily Blunt did not return, Sheridan came back to write the screenplay. Admittedly, the sequel was not quite as successful as Sicario, but it did well enough to merit another movie. In fact, news of Sicario 3, тιтled Sicario: Capos, has been rolling in since 2018. Yet, the movie has yet to take off past the development stage, making audiences worry that the movie will never happen at all.
Taylor Sheridan Would Benefit From Sicario 3 After So Many TV Shows
Sheridan’s Movies Deserve More Attention
Aside from the fact that viewers are eager for another installment in the Sicario franchise, making Sicario: Capos would be a great move for Sheridan. Since 2018, he has been on a roll with his television series, putting out something new every year, sometimes twice a year. For the most part, these shows have garnered notable success, allowing Sheridan to continue building on his TV empire. However, a new way that Sheridan can capitalize on his fame is by transitioning back into movies. By writing Sicario: Capos, Sheridan can satisfy Sicario fans, and also his new television followers.
Arguably, Sheridan’s movies are even more proof that he is a talented writer and director, so more viewers should take the time to appreciate them.
On top of that, Sheridan’s movies deserve more attention anyway. While Hell or High Water and Wind River received plenty of critical praise, many audiences may not have even realized that Sheridan was the mind behind those films. Arguably, Sheridan’s movies are even more proof that he is a talented writer and director, so more viewers should take the time to appreciate them. Therefore, if Sheridan openly announces his work on Sicario: Capos, then more viewers will put two and two together, leading to even more spotlight for Sheridan in both TV and movies.
How Likely Is Sicario 3?
Sicario 3 May Look Different But It Can Still Be Great
At this point, it is hard to tell whether Sicario: Capos will happen. The latest update on the movie came in 2023, when it was announced that Christopher McQuarrie would be involved in the film, and that the script was nearly done. Seeing that that was two years ago, Sicario: Capos has likely hit some sort of ᴅᴇᴀᴅ end, whether due to the script or just general development issues. There is definitely still interest in a new Sicario movie, but it may be difficult to find the right people to work on the project.
Unfortunately, it seems even more unlikely that Sicario: Capos will happen with the same dream team as the original movie. Sheridan is clearly busy with his television projects, and Villeneuve and Blunt have been away from the franchise for a decade now. It would be ideal to get all of these names back on Sicario 3, but even if they don’t return, that doesn’t totally doom the movie. In reality, continuing Sicario in whatever way possible would likely be good enough for viewers.
