Mufasa: The Lion King Sets Streaming Release Date On Disney+

Mufasa: The Lion King has set a streaming release date on Disney+. The Barry Jenkins-directed film is both a prequel and a sequel to the 2019 film The Lion King, showing the rise of lion patriarch Mufasa while also showing Simba and Nala raising their daughter. Mufasa‘s leading voice cast included Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Blue Ivy Carter, and Preston Nyman. Mufasa was met with fairly positive reviews upon its release, and several of its original songs (from composer Lin-Manuel Miranda) have been trending on social media.

As per Variety, Mufasa: The Lion King has officially gotten a streaming release date. The movie will hit Disney+ on Wednesday, March 26. It will stream exclusively on Disney+. It is currently available for purchase or rental on VOD.

What This Means For Mufasa: The Lion King

Mufasa Had Time To Rack Up Theatrical Revenue

Mufasa: The Lion King‘s streaming release date comes over a month after the movie became available for digital purchase on February 18. This gave the film time not only to keep collecting some money in theaters while it lingered in a limited capacity, but also to gain additional revenue through digital sales before becoming available on Disney+. The film also previously announced a Blu-ray and DVD release date, which is planned for April 1. Those who purchase the digital and physical copies get access to exclusive content such as behind-the-scenes features and a full sing-along version.

Mufasa did not do as well as the $1.6 billion 2019 Lion King remake, but it still had a respectable showing in theaters. At the time of writing, the film’s worldwide box office haul stands at $712.4 million. While most of this money came in December 2024 and January 2025, the film has still had somewhat of a lasting impact. It even made it into the domestic box office top 10 last weekend during its 12th week in theaters, beating out new releases Rule Breakers and In the Lost Lands to take the no. 8 slot.

Our Take On The Mufasa: The Lion King Digital Release Date

Mufasa: The Lion King Will Do Well On Streaming

Taka after he becomes Scar in Mufasa: The Lion King

Even though it underperformed compared to the first film, Disney was smart to keep Mufasa in theaters for so long. By the time it is hitting streaming, there will be enough distance from the release to better warrant a rewatch for those who saw it in theaters and have been singing the songs since. The opportunity to stream it at home will only increase the impact of the movie. As such, I anticipate Mufasa: The Lion King to have a successful streaming run upon its March 26 release.
