1923 & The White Lotus Stars’ New Thriller Movie Debuts With Strong Rotten Tomatoes Score

Blumhouse’s latest thriller starring 1923‘s Brandon Sklenar and The White Lotus‘ Meghann Fahy has debuted with strong reviews from critics. Skelnar plays a prominent role in the cast of 1923, Taylor Sheridan’s popular Yellowstone prequel, as Spencer Dutton, the nephew of Harrison Ford’s Jacob Dutton. The hit Paramount+ series returned for season 2 last month, with Skelnar reprising his role in an impressive cast that includes Helen Mirren, Jerome Flynn, Timothy Dalton, and Robert Patrick.

Fahy, on the other hand, will be best known to many audiences for her role as Daphne Sullivan in The White Lotus season 2. Daphne served as one of the key characters in the HBO show’s sophomore outing, with the White Lotus season 2 cast also featuring Jennifer Coolidge, F. Murray Abraham, Adam DiMarco, Beatrice Grannò, Theo James, Tom Hollander, Aubrey Plaza, and Michael Imperioli. Season 2 was generally well-received by critics and audiences, continuing the show’s strong streak on HBO.

Fahy doesn’t return as Daphne in The White Lotus season 3 due to the show’s anthology format.

Drop Is A Hit On Rotten Tomatoes

Blumhouse’s Latest Thriller Is Pleasing Critics

Sklenar and Fahy’s new thriller, Drop, is off to a great start on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day), Blumhouse’s new movie stars Fahy as Violet, a widowed mother who embarks on her first date in many years. The dinner date in a fancy restaurant takes a dark turn, however, when she begins receiving threatening text messages on her phone, and she comes to suspect that her seemingly charming date, Sklenar’s Henry, could be behind it.

Ahead of the movie’s release in theaters on April 11, Rotten Tomatoes reveals that Drop has debuted with a strong critics’ score of 89% from 18 reviews, as of writing. Though this score is sure to fluctuate as more reviews are added, it’s clear that critics are generally enjoying the twisty and unpredictable thriller. An audience-driven Popcornmeter score hasn’t arrived yet, but one should start to take shape following the film’s release in theaters.

What Drop’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For The Movie

Why Critics Are Enjoying The New Blumhouse Thriller

Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar look at something in Drop

The reviews that have been released thus far generally praise the film for its inventive use of its primary restaurant location, as well as its tense story and efficient script. In her Drop review for ScreenRant, Mae Abdulbaki awards the film eight out of 10, praising its brisk pace and the strong performances from both Sklenar and Fahy, in addition to the ways in which the thriller taps into universal first date fears. Check out a portion of her review below:

It caused a plethora of fervent reactions — laughter, wild applause, and quite a few gasps and “ohs”. I was locked into the film from the start, with an opening scene that seemingly alludes to how Violet’s (Meghann Fahy) night will end before returning the day of the date with Henry (Brandon Sklenar). Director Christopher Landon, working from a script by Jillian Jacobs and Christopher Roach, has an instant hit on his hands with Drop.

Blumhouse has found a great deal of success as a studio by making high-concept horror movies on relatively small budgets. It’s not clear what Drop‘s budget is, but the limited locations and lack of A-list movie stars suggests it fits perfectly within this model. Though it’s the audience response that will determine whether Drop ends up being successful, the critics’ response is an early sign that the movie will end up being another win for Blumhouse.
