Since Avengers: Secret Wars is borrowing from the Marvel comic of the same name, the Russo Brothers tease how much the Marvel Cinematic Universe will adapt from the source material. The MCU is getting closer to finishing The Multiverse Saga, as the franchise is approaching Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. To help bring Phase 6 to an end, Anthony and Joe Russo are set to return to the MCU to helm the two Avengers sequels, following their tremendous success with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

In a new interview with TechRadar, the Russo Brothers were asked about the direction of Avengers: Secret Wars while they are getting ready for Avengers: Doomsday. When they were asked about how much of the Secret Wars comic books the MCU is looking to adapt, Joe Russo gave the following response:

Well, we always create our own version of the story. So, we use the comics as loose inspiration. But, you know, I grew up on the original run. That’s something that got me into Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is also fantastic [and they’re] very different from each other in a lot of ways, so we’ll draw inspiration from both of them.

What The Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Secret Wars Comments Mean For The MCU

When it comes to using major Marvel Comics тιтles for the MCU, Marvel Studios has traditionally always done their own spin on some of the most famous storylines. Often, the тιтles are used in name only, while the MCU movies or TV shows take their own approach. However, with the Avengers: Secret Wars story, the Russo Brothers clearly want to honor the spirit of the Secret Wars comics while also giving it the MCU spin.

Given the major fallout that came out of Jim Shooter and Jonathan Hickman’s respective Secret Wars storylines, it makes sense that the Russo Brothers want to make sure there are twists and turns along the way to give Avengers: Secret Wars its own trajectory in the MCU. While the end result will likely be how the modern Secret Wars comic concluded, there are bound to be some unique directions, especially with the way the Avengers: Secret Wars cast is being built up.

Following the recent Avengers: Secret Wars comments by the Russo Brothers, it lines up with the rumors that the MCU will be going through a soft reboot after the Phase 6 finale, which would involve multiple timelines becoming one. The bigger question now, however, is which MCU actors will end up being back for both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, especially with the former getting ready to start filming this year. For now, the world will have to wait patiently to see how Avengers: Secret Wars will reshape the MCU.
