The new DC Universe could have the same success Ryan Reynolds has found at Fox and Marvel as Wade Wilson with its version of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool. While his debut came in one of the most criticized superhero movies of all time, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds has proven himself to be one of the most beloved superhero film stars through his ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool movie franchise. The films brought a very different version of Wade Wilson to life, which was much more faithful to the comics. The DCU’s Chapter One can go for that same idea with its version of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool.
James Gunn’s DC Universe will be closer to the comics than the old DCEU was. The franchise already has many movies and TV shows scheduled for release or in different states of development. Among those is the debut of DC’s version of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool. Based on Reynolds’ success at Marvel, the project the DC character will debut, and the actor set to play him, all the elements needed to make sure the DCU’s version of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool succeeds are firmly in place. Due to that, I’m fairly sure the character will star in one of DC’s future movies.
Lobo Is DC’s Version Of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & His DCU Debut Fits Recent Successful Projects
Lobo Will Be Played By A DC Veteran
While ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and Deathstroke are usually the ones to be compared when it comes to DC and Marvel copying each other, the Merc With a Mouth also shares many similarities with Lobo. The cosmic bounty hunter thrives off the same kind of R-rated violence ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool is known for, with an irreverent tone and a penchant for sarcastic remarks. Like ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool, Lobo is one of the hardest characters to kill in DC Comics, with both the Marvel and DC characters possessing powerful healing factors. Recently, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn compared the two.
During the February DC Studios event with James Gunn and Peter Safran, where ScreenRant heard many updates about the DCU’s future, Gunn compared Lobo and ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool. According to Gunn, like ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool, Lobo is one of the characters that comic book fans love, but general audiences are unaware of, so the DCU can make Lobo a mainstream name. ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, with over $1.3 billion, showing ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s success. More mature superhero projects have also worked out for DC, with Creature Commandos and Peacemaker becoming streaming hits. Lobo fits that line of thinking.
I Believe Jason Momoa’s Casting As Lobo Makes A Solo Movie Inevitable
DC Has A Possible Gold Mine On Its Hands
Based on Lobo’s similarities with ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and how Jason Momoa plays the character in James Gunn’s DC Universe, I’m convinced that he will become a major player in the franchise. Momoa played Aquaman in the old DCEU. While he did not carry over as his previous DC character into the DCU, Momoa’s track record with the studio is excellent. That is because 2018’s Aquaman grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing DC movie of all time. Based on that and how Gunn talked about Lobo’s potential, I feel that a Lobo solo film is very likely.
Momoa’s huge success as Aquaman, allied to ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s latest movie grossing over $1.3 billion, makes me believe that we could be looking at not only a Lobo solo film in the near future, but potentially a $1 billion earner. That said, the only first solo movies for superheroes that grossed over $1 billion were those that followed their debuts in team-up movies, such as Black Panther after Captain America: Civil War or Momoa’s Aquaman after Justice League. I’m sure a Lobo movie with Momoa is a recipe for success, but a Lobo sequel has better chances at $1 billion.
Lobo’s DCU Debut Inspires Confidence In His Franchise Future
The Character Faces A DC Giant In His Debut
Momoa will first play Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. That is one of my favorite DC Comics stories of the past decade, and its more mature tone is perfect for Lobo’s debut to make a major impact. Playing in favor of that is the fact that Ana Nogueira, who penned the Supergirl film, has been confirmed as the scribe of DC’s upcoming Teen тιтans movie. DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Safran would not give her the keys to such a major franchise unless they regarded her work in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as top-notch.

Based on that, I feel confident that Lobo’s debut will be handled well and that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will turn out great. I really like the fact that DC’s version of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool is debuting in a smaller role in the Supergirl movie. The project serves as the perfect way to showcase Lobo’s power levels when he goes up against Supergirl, the darker tone of his violence and imposing persona, as well as his R-rated brand of sarcastic humor, which I know Momoa will excel at portraying. Based on what we know, the sky’s the limit for Lobo.

DC Universe
The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
