Captain America: Brave New World has just beaten Chris Evans’s first movie as Captain America at the box office. Evans’ Captain America movies became integral to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the actor turning into one of the two faces of the franchise alongside Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. That meant Anthony Mackie had big shoes to fill when Sam Wilson became the new Captain America. While he did a great job in the role, Captain America: Brave New World‘s reviews were mostly negative, but its box office now presents more encouraging results.
According to Box Office Mojo, Captain America: Brave New World has pᴀssed Captain America: The First Avenger at the worldwide box office. Anthony Mackie’s first movie as Captain America now stands at $370.8 million opposite the $370.6 million of Chris Evans’ first MCU Captain America film. Evans’ debut movie in the MCU was released during Phase 1, when the franchise was still in its infancy. The actor’s two following solo films as Captain America would see a huge bump in box office returns, with $714.4 million and $1.15 billion, respectively. That means a Brave New World sequel could do better.
What Captain America: Brave New World’s Box Office Update Means
A Weight Has Been Lifted
With its latest box office report, Mackie’s first movie as Captain America takes a lot of weight off its shoulders. Brave New World is no longer the lowest-grossing film in the Captain America franchise. Mackie’s time as Captain America would always be compared to Evans’. After all, the actor is taking on a mantle that belonged to one of the MCU’s most beloved stars. As Sam Wilson had been a supporting player for all of his MCU tenure, save for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Captain America: Brave New World‘s box office was always going to be modest.

Evans’ sequels as Captain America, The Winter Soldier and Civil War, would go on to beat the box office of his MCU debut by hundreds of millions. If Sam Wilson is given the same chances Steve Rogers had in the franchise, the same could hold true for the character. Mackie’s first Captain America film is already performing better than Evans’ first movie as the Marvel hero, so there seems to be plenty of room to grow with the right story and supporting cast in a sequel, just like what happened with Evans’ Captain America.
Our Take On Captain America: Brave New World’s Box Office Update
The Franchise Has Room To Grow
I’m glad Captain America: Brave New World‘s latest box office update sees it surpᴀss The First Avenger‘s entire gross in just four weeks. While I think the Chris Evans movie is the better of the two, Mackie’s first film as Captain America was entertaining, and Sam Wilson certainly deserves another chance in a less The Incredible Hulk-focused story to really shine as Cap. While Captain America: Brave New World is not going to be a mᴀssive hit by the end of its box office run, the numbers show it will recoup its $180 million budget and turn a profit.
