Another Simple Favor director Paul Feig reveals that he has a strong idea in mind for a third movie and knows where he wants to go with it. The first movie in the franchise, A Simple Favor, was released back in 2018, and the black comedy mystery film is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Darcey Bell. A Simple Favor‘s cast stars Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, and the movie grossed over $97 million, as well as enjoying a strong performance on streaming, and its success led to the development of the sequel Another Simple Favor.
During an interview with ScreenRant for Another Simple Favor‘s debut at SXSW, Feig revealed that he expects the franchise to continue beyond the second movie. Feig talked about how he has an idea about where a third movie could go, but doesn’t expect there to be a seven-year wait this time. He concluded by saying that timing is everything when it comes to developing and releasing a sequel, and that this is something that needs to be accounted for. Check out Feig’s full comments below:
Paul Feig: Hopefully, [we’re] going to make a third one. I’ve got a nice thing in mind. I think this movie series could be three. What would you call that?
ScreenRant: The kids call it “threequels”
Paul Feig: Threequels. There you go. Yeah, it could be three movies in this story. So, yeah, I know where I’d like it to go.
ScreenRant: Would you wait another seven years?
Paul Feig: Hopefully not, but the thing with sequels is you don’t know. The timing of a sequel is a weird thing, too. Either you wait too long and people are like, “Why are you doing that?” or you do it too soon, and it seems like you just rushed it together, so who knows? We’ll see.
What This Means For The Future Of The Franchise
A Simple Favor 3 Could Cap Off A Strong Trilogy
These comments should be exciting for those who love A Simple Favor and for those who are looking forward to Another Simple Favor’s release. Feig seems invested in the franchise, and the fact that he is talking about developing a third movie is very encouraging, especially if the second movie becomes a streaming hit on Prime Video. The first movie was a smartly written and well-paced mystery thriller, which thrived on its strong cast and intricate plot twists, and the second movie looks as though it is bigger and more ambitious than its predecessor.
It is unclear which direction A Simple Favor 3 might take, and a lot will depend on the narrative direction of the second movie, as well as how the film ends, and what plot twists occur. There will not be any source material to draw from, so the characters and arcs from the previous two movies would need to be expanded upon. Another Simple Favor seems as though it has taken everything up a notch, providing a more grand and stylistic story, and a third installment will need to combine the best elements of the first two movies.
Our Take On The Chances Of A Simple Favor 3
There Should Be Less Of A Wait, But Much Will Depend On Lively’s Ongoing Legal Issues
If A Simple Favor 3 happens, there probably won’t be a seven-year wait, especially with Feig already having a direction for it. Of course, much will depend on the status of star Lively’s ongoing legal battle with It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni. The longer the lawsuits drag on, the more likely it is to monopolize Lively’s time, and impact her filmography in the future. In the meantime, fans can enjoy watching Another Simple Favor once it comes to Prime Video, along with other movies like A Simple Favor as they wait for a potential third installment.
