Mikey Madison’s Oscar Win Is A Reason To Visit Her Performance In 2022’s Scream
Madison Starred As Amber In Scream 5
Mikey Madison pulled off an upset at the 2025 Oscars when she won Best Actress over Demi Moore, who was the odds-on favorite to win for her performance in The Substance. She also beat Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Karla Sofía Gascón for Emilia Pérez, and Fernanda Torres for I’m Still Here. Madison was awarded the Academy Award for her role as Anora “Ani” Mikheeva in Anora. However, while Anora has propelled Madison to stardom and universal acclaim, she was first known for playing Amber Freeman in the fifth Scream film — Scream (2022).

Even before she won an Oscar, many praised Freeman for her performance in the fifth Scream movie. Her reveal as Ghostface is undoubtedly one of the best in the franchise. Yes, Amber being one of the killers is a little obvious, but the scene when the truth finally comes out is unforgettable, thanks to Madison. The actress did a wonderful job of portraying a psycH๏τic murderer who can just as easily switch to playing a believable victim. Now that Madison has an Oscar, fans can go back and watch her performance in Scream (2022) in a different light, available on Netflix or Paramount+.
Mikey Madison Is The First Oscar-Winning Ghostface In Scream’s History
There Have Been 12 Ghostface Killers
Surprisingly enough, Mikey Madison is the only person who has played Ghostface in a Scream movie and won an Academy Award. No one else in that exclusive group has received an Oscar. Not counting Tony Revolori’s Jason Carvey and Thom Newell’s Greg Bruckner in Scream VI, the slasher franchise has introduced 12 Ghostfaces throughout six films. Spoiler alert — the next paragraph reveals the idenтιтies of all the stars who have portrayed Ghostface in the Scream universe.
In order of appearance, the actors who have played the infamous horror movie villain are Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard, Laurie Metcalf, Timothy Olyphant, Scott Foley, Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, Jack Quaid, Mikey Madison, Dermot Mulroney, Liana Liberato, and Jack Champion. Metcalf was nominated for the Academy Award in 2017 for her performance in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird but lost to Allison Janney for I, Tonya. Other than Metcalf, though, no other Ghostface actors (aside from Madison) have received Oscar nominations. Consequently, Madison is the only one in the group of Scream villains who has won an Academy Award.
How Scream Helped Mikey Madison’s Path To Winning An Oscar
Madison’s Performance In Scream Caught Sean Baker’s Attention
Scream (2022) was the catalyst to Mikey Madison’s Oscar win. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Anora director Sean Baker wrote the lead role in his movie for Madison specifically. After watching the actress in the fifth Scream film and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, Baker knew he wanted to work with her. So, he got to work writing the script for Anora, and the rest is history. When Madison agreed to play Anora, she likely didn’t think it would lead to her winning the Oscar for Best Actress. Nevertheless, Madison triumphed, putting her role in Scream into a new perspective.
