A sequel to Mickey 17 has not been announced, but the novel enтιтled Antimatter Blues continues to chronicle the adventures of Mickey Barnes on Niflheim. Mickey 17, the newest movie directed by Bong Joon-ho, is based on the 2022 science fiction novel Mickey7. In the film, Mickey Barnes signs up to be an “Expendable” on a space voyage to a mysterious planet. In this role, he is continuously killed and then reprinted so that the scientists can ensure the survival of their colony of humans.
The cast of Mickey 17 includes Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackle, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, and Toni Collette. Even though the movie adaptation makes some significant changes from the book, reviews for Mickey 17 have been exceptional. Screen Rant’s own Alexander Harrison gave Mickey 17 a score of 8 out of 10, and praised Bong’s direction and the performances of the cast. The ending of Mickey 17 is quite different from the ending of Mickey7, which more properly sets up a sequel. Therefore, here is what happens in the Mickey7 sequel novel Antimatter Blues.
Antimatter Blues Is A Sequel Book Following Mickey
Mickey Maintains Peace With The Creepers In Antimatter Blues
Obviously, based on their тιтles, a major change between the movie and the book is how many times Mickey is killed. The film adaptation actually kills Mickey ten more times than the novel, which is why the name of the movie was changed. However, there are also several other differences between Mickey 17 and its source material, Mickey7. For example, Mickey8 doesn’t actually blow himself up along with Kenneth Marshall in the novel.
Instead, when Marshall finds out that Mickey7 and Mickey8 are duplicates, he sends them on a suicide mission with antimatter bombs to blow up the Creepers. Mickey7 doesn’t want to kill the Creepers, since he knows that they want to co-exist peacefully. However, Mickey8 doesn’t feel the same way, and is ready to blow up a giant nest of Creepers until he is killed by the Giant Creeper. Therefore, Antimatter Blues, the sequel to Mickey7, follows a Mickey who has quit being an Expendable and is no longer burdened by the existence of Mickey8.
Antimatter Blues Introduces Another Alien Race On Niflheim
The Collective Is Introduced In Antimatter Blues
Since the ending of Mickey7 is quite different from the film, Marshall doesn’t actually die in the novel. In Antimatter Blues, Marshall would still be ᴅᴇᴀᴅset on waging war against the Creepers, but Mickey7 convinces him that he left one of the antimatter bombs behind with the alien race. Therefore, if Marshall doesn’t learn how to share Niflheim with the Creepers, then all humans could die. In reality, Mickey7 just hid the antimatter bomb behind a rock on Niflheim, since he obviously doesn’t trust Marshall with it.
The Collective poses a threat to both humans and the Creepers, so the two species must learn to work together to ensure their survival.
Marshal is unsurprisingly infuriated that he can’t further attack the Creepers, but he has no choice but to continue to co-exist with them. However, things get more complicated in Antimatter Blues when humans discover that there is another alien species on Niflheim. While the Creepers are the only creatures featured in the Mickey 17 film, in the sequel novel, humans become aware of another species of indigenous creatures on Niflheim known as the Collective. The Collective poses a threat to both humans and the Creepers, so the two species must learn to work together to ensure their survival.
What Happens To Mickey In Antimatter Blues
Mickey Becomes More Of A Leader In Antimatter Blues
Since the human colony on Niflheim is fueled by antimatter, the fact that Mickey hides the bomb in Mickey7 comes back to haunt him in the sequel. In Antimatter Blues, Marshall tasks Mickey with retrieving the antimatter bomb from the Creepers. Marshall claims that they will cooperate with the Creepers if they can have the bomb back. However, throughout the novel, Mickey continuously proves that he is a more capable leader than Marshall. Therefore, he is the one who has to unite humans and the Creepers so that they can fight together against the Collective.
By working together, humans and the Creepers successfully defeat the Collective in Antimatter Blues. Afterward, humans get their antimatter bomb back so that they can continue to focus on their thriving colony. Overall, the story of Antimatter Blues focuses on humans and the Creepers learning to co-exist and make peace with one another, so that both species can thrive on Niflheim. Even though there are many differences between Mickey 17 and the novels it is based on, Mickey7 and Antimatter Blues are both great books that are worth a read.
