The MCU teased Spider-Man’s successor more than eight years before Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man 4, and while Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars could introduce him a different way, Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Miles Morales tease is still worth paying off. Although Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s tragic ending marked the end of an era for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, Spider-Man’s MCU journey will continue with new solo movies and crossover events. Holland’s Spider-Man will probably team up with the Avengers again to fight Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, and he’ll likely be around for at least two direct sequels to the MCU’s upcoming Spider-Man 4, which may release before the Multiverse Saga ends.

A big question looming over Spider-Man’s MCU story is when and how he’ll meet Miles Morales. Miles Morales has become a breakout Marvel character since his comic book introduction in 2011, with key roles in comic books, video games, and animated movies and shows. Miles’ starring role in Sony’s Spider-Verse movies has made him just as important to Spider-Man movie history as Peter Parker. Now, Miles Morales’ live-action debut in the MCU is imminent.

In 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Donald Glover made his MCU debut as Aaron Davis — a New York City criminal who gets involved in illegal weapon deals with Adrian Toomes a.k.a. the Vulture and Herman Schultz a.k.a. Shocker. After interfering in a purchase, Spider-Man webs Davis’ hands onto his own car and interrogates him. Spider-Man spares Davis from an arrest when Davis reveals that he has a nephew he doesn’t want involved in his criminal activities. This is the MCU’s first nod to Miles Morales, who eventually fights his uncle Aaron Davis a.k.a. the Prowler after becoming Spider-Man.

Although Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars could bring a multiversal version of Miles Morales from another timeline, Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Miles Morales easter egg confirms he already exists in the MCU’s main timeline. It also connects Miles Morales to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the latter’s first official adventure as Spider-Man. If Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars replace this unseen Miles Morales with an alternate-reality variant or soft-reboots the franchise, the MCU would miss the chance to establish a solid link between the beginning and possible ending of Tom Holland’s MCU journey as Spider-Man in a future movie.

Besides setting up Miles Morales’ MCU introduction, Donald Glover’s brief appearance as Aaron Davis in Spider-Man: Homecoming teases his transformation into the Spider-Man villain “Prowler”. In the comics, Aaron Davis partakes in various illegal activities as the Prowler, and he finds himself in a moral conundrum when he realizes that his nephew Miles has become a new Spider-Man. As adapted by the animated Spider-Verse movies, Aaron Davis’ death is a key event in Miles Morales’ superhero career. However, he returns through multiversal means and returns to his criminal activities.

Donald Glover reprised his Aaron Davis role from Spider-Man: Homecoming in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where a live-action variant of Aaron Davis in full Prowler gear is shown imprisoned in the Spider-Society’s headquarters. Donald Glover’s cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse suggests he became a full-fledged villain after his encounter with Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but then he made a decision that risked his universe’s continuity and was soon apprehended by Miguel O’Hara’s forces. Marvel Studios hasn’t officially confirmed Donald Glover’s Spider-Verse Prowler to be the exact same character as Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Aaron Davis, however.

Miles Morales’ Multiversal Origin Doesn’t Have The Necessary Background To Make It Worth The Effort

Miles Morales joins the “main universe” Peter Parker as Spider-Man both in the comics and in the Spider-Verse movies thanks to an episode of multiversal instability. In the source material, Miles Morales establishes himself as Spider-Man on Earth-616 after his original timeline, Earth-1610 a.k.a. the Ultimate Universe, collapsed. While Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars‘ multiversal plot could bring a Miles variant from an alternate timeline into the MCU’s Earth-616, the effect wouldn’t be the same. Whereas Marvel Comics’ Ultimate universe had been thoroughly explored before Miles’ arrival, there are no live-action universes where Miles Morales is known to exist besides the MCU’s main timeline.

The MCU could take advantage of the character’s already established popularity and bring the Spider-Verse‘s Miles Morales over. However, there are a few problems with this scenario. First, Aaron Davis’ Prowler cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse suggests that Miles would retain his animated appearance in an MCU crossover. Second, the Spider-Verse‘s Miles Morales already had a Peter Parker mentor in his own franchise. And third, Miles’ relationships are essential to his story, meaning that the MCU would have to integrate multiple animated Spider-People or cut them altogether, which would be a disservice to characters as popular as Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen and Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir. Simply following up Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Miles Morales tease would be much more effective.
