Wicked Star Cast In Lionsgate’s Action Thriller With A Samurai Twist

Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has joined the cast of an upcoming action thriller said to have a samurai twist. Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winning theater star Erivo recently played the leading role of Elphaba in Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway classic Wicked. Growing up in London, Erivo made her theater debut in 2011 and enjoyed a prolific career on stage, notably appearing in The Color Purple before progressing to British TV shows including Chewing Gum and The Tunnel.

Erivo made her movie debut in 2018, playing the role of Belle in Steve McQueen’s heist thriller Widows, following it up with a supporting role in Bad Times at the El Royale. Her breakout movie role came when she starred as Harriet Tubman in the biographical movie Harriet, for which she received an Academy Award nomination. With a strong career path in theater and television, Erivo’s film career has taken off further in the past year, with Wicked raising her profile, and she is set to star in an unusual upcoming project.

Erivio Will Star in The Upcoming Movie Karoshi

The Film’s Intriguing Logline Calls For A Diverse Performer

Per Lionsgate, Erivo will star in Karoshi, with a cast that also includes Past Lives‘ Teo Yoo. 87Eleven Entertainment’s Chad Stahelski, Alex Young, and Jason Spitz are set to produce under their deal with Lionsgate. The movie is slated to enter production in June, and Takashi Doscher will direct from a script he penned himself, and the plot is currently under wraps at the moment. The film is described as being a corporate thriller that includes a samurai twist.

As an Academy Award-nominee and rising star, she will add gravitas to the movie, and her casting will no doubt attract other stars.

Not much else is known about the movie at this point, but the fact that Lionsgate is involved means a streaming release is pretty much a certainty, and the movie could skip the traditional theatrical release. A unique and offbeat choice of movie calls for a performer with a strong and exciting range, and this is certainly something Erivo has demonstrated throughout her career. Open to taking on new roles and experimenting with characters, Erivo feels like a good fit for Karoshi.

Our Take On Erivo’s Casting In Karoshi

This Feels Like Another Great Role For The Actress To Push Herself

Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba holding her black hat in Wicked

Erivo’s filmography suggests she’s an actress who is not afraid to push herself and experiment with roles, and Karoshi feels like a weird and wonderfully offbeat choice for the Wicked star. As an Academy Award-nominee and rising star, she will add some gravitas to the movie, and her casting will no doubt attract other stars to the film. It’s unclear at this point whether Karoshi will be a top role for Cynthia Erivo, but it’s certainly set to be an interesting addition to her filmography.
