The Japanese Thriller That Inspired Keanu Reeves’ Speed Gets An Action-Packed Netflix Remake In Bullet Train Explosion Trailer

Netflix has released the first trailer for the Japanese remake, Bullet Train Explosion. The movie is based on the 1975 film Bullet Train, which sees criminals plant a bomb on a high-speed train that will explode when the vehicle slows down. It has no direct relation to the 2022 Brad Pitt film Bullet Train. Netflix’s rendition of the 1975 film is directed by Shinji Higuchi and features Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, Kanata Hosoda, Jun Kaname, Machiko Ono, and Suzuka Ohgo.

Now, Netflix has released the trailer for Bullet Train Explosion. The trailer begins by showing a high-speed train with a conductor who says ᴀssuredly that his “job is to keep everyone safe and secure.” It is soon revealed that a bomb has been planted on this train and will explode if the train reaches a speed of less than 100km/hr. The government becomes involved after the terrorists demand a ransom of 100 billion yen. Collaborating with the conductor and crew, groups on and off the train must come together to protect the pᴀssengers. Check it out below:

American Audiences Will Recognize This Plot

The plot of Bullet Train Explosion will look very familiar to American audiences. The 1975 Japanese original partially inspired the Keanu Reeves movie Speed, which came out in 1994. This film subsтιтutes a train for a bus, forcing the vehicle to drive at least 50mph. There are a lot of similar elements in Bullet Train Explosion, including the speed requirement, as well as a ransom request that looms over the lawmakers in this situation. The threat of dipping below the required 100km/hr is present in the trailer as the high-speed vehicle reaches 106km/hr at one point.

Furthermore, the original 1975 movie inspired countless other remakes, including two Indian versions (Tezz and The Burning Train). If the full film mirrors the trailer, Bullet Train Explosion will use distinct filmmaking techniques to mimic the high-speed nature of the train itself. The trailer includes a lot of cuts, making for an edit that is almost frenetic in pace. This momentum could help make the film a thrilling, tense, and high-octane experience.

Our Take On The Bullet Train Explosion Trailer

This Could Be A Huge Hit

Despite not being in English, Bullet Train Explosion has the potential to be a huge hit for Netflix. Speed made back its budget by over tenfold during its release, grossing over $350 million worldwide on an estimated $30 million budget. Netflix also did well with another transit-related thriller recently with Carry-On, which had an airport as its main setting. Given these factors, Bullet Train Explosion has the chance to become one of the streaming platform’s next big action thriller hits.

Bullet Train Explosion is set for release on April 23.
