I have a feeling Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will be much wilder than anyone expects, especially after new comments from returning MCU directing duo, the Russo brothers. I was thrilled to hear that the Russo brothers were reuniting with Marvel Studios to direct Phase 6’s Avengers movies, as they’ve previously developed four of my favorite MCU projects. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame are some of the MCU’s most successful movies, and the Russo brothers are expected to repeat this success with Doomsday and Secret Wars.
Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars are two of the most exciting and highly-anticipated MCU movies in history, and the anticipation for these projects only grew after the Russo brothers were announced to be returning, especially since Robert Downey Jr. was also cast as Doctor Doom. There have been many theories about what stories will unfold in Doomsday and Secret Wars, but new comments by the Russo brothers could imply that the actual movies will be much bigger and far more unexpected. This has me incredibly excited, but also has me curious about what we’ll see in Phase 6.
There Have Been So Many Theories About Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Since They Were First Announced
There’s A Lot Of Pressure On Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars
Ever since Marvel boss Kevin Feige confirmed the development of a fifth and sixth Avengers movie back in 2022, there has been speculation about exactly what events will unfold in these crossover projects. Originally тιтled The Kang Dynasty, Avengers: Doomsday was one expected to pit a new team of Avengers against Kang the Conqueror and his variants, but will now presumably see them fighting Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Avengers: Secret Wars may be easier to decipher, perhaps adapting Marvel Comics’ 1984 and 2015 Secret Wars events, but we’re still not sure what to expect.
There have been theories suggesting returning characters and multiversal cameos, even so far as to bringing together a team of multiversal Avengers. Some have even suggested an evil Avengers team could debut, led by Doctor Doom. There has been speculation that Doctor Doom could form Battleworld, like in Marvel Comics, saving many variants after incursions ravage the multiverse, while Secret Wars is also theorized to be ending with a soft-reboot of the entire MCU. The volume of these theories makes it hard to work out what might be true, but the Russo brothers might have just dashed all our expectations.
The Russo Brothers’ “Challenge” Promise Suggests The Avengers Movies Could Take A Major Turn
Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Will Be “Radical”
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of their recent movie, The Electric State, the Russo brothers briefly discussed the development of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Interestingly, the Russo brothers suggest that Doomsday and Secret Wars will “challenge audiences,” as they’ve found a way into the story that is “very exciting [but also] very radical.” This could imply that we simply don’t know what to expect from Phase 6’s upcoming crossover movies, as a radical challenge means all our theories may be wrong.

The Russo brothers have often pushed the boundaries of what is expected from the MCU, so it’s no wonder that Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars will do the same. The Winter Soldier almost had HYDRA wipe out millions of innocent individuals, while Civil War divided and disbanded the Avengers, the MCU’s core superhero team. Infinity War ended with the Avengers losing to Thanos, while Endgame marked the deaths and retirements of some of the MCU’s most iconic heroes. If Doomsday and Secret Wars follow in these movies’ footsteps, the only thing we can expect for sure are some “radical” twists.
What The Russo Brothers’ “Challenge” Comment Could Mean
We Don’t Know What To Expect From Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Now
The Russo brothers have routinely stressed how much love they have for Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars storylines, which implies they’ll make attempts to adapt the event as faithfully as possible. This should suggest that we would be able to figure out exactly what story will unfold in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, but the Russo brothers’ new comments make me think that the live-action story will deviate somewhat, perhaps in some mᴀssive ways. Due to this, the Russo brothers’ “radical” and challenging story is remarkably hard to predict.

After the post-credits scene of Captain America: Brave New World teased dark forces from alternate worlds, and with the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps reboot set to explore a new reality, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars could easily introduce many “radical” new plot threads. This could include villainous variants, ambitious and universe-altering stories and diversions from the Marvel Comics source material. I’m incredibly excited about what possibilities this open-endedness creates for the MCU’s Phase 6, and full of anticipation about what the Russo brothers will deliver.
