A new Warfare video has revealed how Alex Garland brought his filmmaking from Civil War to a real-life conflict alongside veteran Ray Mendoza. Garland’s follow-up to his well-received Civil War is a movie co-written and co-directed by Mendoza, based on a mission the former US Navy SEAL embarked upon in 2006. The movie will be presenting its story in real-time, following an ensemble cast of soldiers during the Iraq War as they are forced too grapple with ᴅᴇᴀᴅly dangers around every corner. The film also stars D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Mendoza himself.
Now, A24 has released a featurette where Garland and Mendoza explain the purpose behind making Warfare. The co-creators explain the film adapts a mission Mendoza was on with his friend, Elliot Miller, who doesn’t recall the details of their mission that went wrong. Multiple actors in the movie also spoke about the film, explaining how they went to a three-week boot camp as new, harrowing footage of the mission plays. They emphasize the importance of the movie, with Mendoza wanting to reflect an accurate experience for veterans of the Iraq War. Check out the video below:
What Warfare’s New Featurette Says About The Movie
The Real-Time Film Will Be Very True To Life
Given the dedication of the actors and creators alike, the film promises stunning realism with emotional, high-octane moments for its large cast throughout.
Garland’s best movies include memorable characters and events that feel realistic, even when some films, like Ex Machina and Annihilation, include sci-fi elements. With Warfare, however, the grounded reality is emphasized by Mendoza’s memory of real events, coupled with its approach to showing the mission that becomes a fight for survival in real time. The featurette offers more information about how important it was to get details correct, not only for Miller’s sake, but also for veterans watching from home who can attest to the events that transpire.
Alongside Woon-A-Tai, other important members of the ensemble cast include Cosmo Jarvis as Elliot, Will Poulter as Erik, Joseph Qunn as Sam, Kit Connor as Tommy, and Michael Gandolfini as Lieutenant McDonald. Some of the best modern war movies also include stories of both tragedy and resilience with large casts of their own, with Warfare seemingly following in its footsteps. Given the dedication of the actors and creators alike, the film promises stunning realism with emotional, high-octane moments for its large cast throughout.
