Heart Eyes VOD & Blu-Ray Release Dates Revealed After $30M Box Office

Heart Eyes

‘ VOD and Blu-ray release dates have now been revealed. Directed by Josh Ruben, the slasher horror comedy movie chronicles the victims of the Heart Eyes Killer, a vicious murderer who targets romantic couples on Valentine’s Day. Heart Eyes stars Mason Gooding, Jordana Brewster, Olivia Holt, Gigi Zumbado, Michaela Watkins, and Alex Walker, and was met with mostly positive reviews from critics upon its release on February 7. It has since grossed a modest $30.9 million worldwide at the box office.

As the film remains available in theaters, Sony announces that Heart Eyes is now available to rent and purchase on VOD on major digital platforms, including Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Google Play. The film will cost the standard $19.99 to rent and $24.99 to purchase. Sony has also confirmed that Heart Eyes will release on Blu-ray and DVD on April 15, though it doesn’t appear that the film will be releasing on 4K UHD. The digital and Blu-ray releases will include the following extras:

  • Murders & Meet Cutes: The Making of Heart Eyes
  • Gag Reel
  • Deleted & Extended Scenes
  • Filmmaker Commentary

DVD copies will include only the “Murders & Meet Cutes: The Making of Heart Eyes” and the “Filmmaker Commentary” extras.

What Heart Eyes’ Home Release Means For The Movie

Will The Horror Movie Break Even?

Heart Eyes digital release comes less than one month after the film first hit theaters, continuing a trend of shorter exclusive theatrical windows for movies. Made on an estimated budget of $18 million, the horror film may have been looking at a break-even point of around $36 million. At just under $32 million grossed worldwide, it’s likely that Heart Eyes will eventually reach this figure. The film remains available in movie theaters, after all, and grossed $1.3 million the weekend of Feb. 28 – Mar. 2.

Revenue generated from home releases is essentially never released, but it’s possible that Heart Eyes will end up being a hit on digital and physical media. Though ScreenRant‘s Molly Freeman wasn’t overly enthusiastic in her Heart Eyes review, awarding it only a five out of 10, the film was generally positively received elsewhere. On Rotten Tomatoes, it enjoys a critics’ score of 80% and a Popcornmeter score of 78%, with praise aimed at the mix of horror, comedy, and romance, and the charismatic Heart Eyes cast.

Our Take On Heart Eyes’ Home Release

The Horror Film Is Worth Checking Out

Olivia Holt And Mason Gooding In The Front Seat Of A Van Looking Toward The Back In Heart Eyes

Gooding is best known to audiences for his role as Chad Meeks-Martin in the two most recent Scream movies, and he makes for a strong addition to Heart Eyes. The film is a fun genre mashup that may not break the mold when it comes to either horror or romance, but it has enough surprises to keep audiences entertained. Though these surprises are probably best experienced in a movie theater with a crowd of people, Heart Eyes could certainly play well on home viewing platforms.

It’s interesting that Heart Eyes isn’t releasing on 4K UHD, which remains the best possible way to watch a movie at home in terms of audio and visual quality. Sony may not think that there’s a big enough audience that will purchase the film in this format, and this is yet another blow to the physical media landscape. It remains to be seen whether Heart Eyes will find success at home, but its release on digital and physical will evidently give many more viewers the chance to watch the film.
