Tyler Perry’s War Movie Continues A 16-Nominations Oscars Streak That Dates Back To 1987

Just like with every other year, the 2025 Oscars had its fair share of well-deserved wins and surprising losses. Among the latter was songwriter Diane Warren’s loss in the category of Best Original Song in Tyler Perry’s war drama, The Six Triple Eight. Following World War II’s first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color, The Six Triple Eight plays Warren’s song, “The Journey,” at the end of the film while the credits roll.

Though “The Journey” earned its nomination for Best Original Song at the Oscars, it ultimately lost the Academy Award to “El Mal” from the film Emilia Pérez. While Warren’s loss at the 2025 Oscars would have been surprising enough, it’s actually the latest in a shockingly long streak of losses for the legendary songwriter that goes back decades, making it one of the most notorious records in Oscars history.

The Six Triple Eight Not Winning Best Original Song At Oscars 2025 Continues Diane Warren’s Losing Streak

Diane Warren’s Not Winning The Oscar Adds To One Of The Longest Loss Streaks In The Academy’s History

Since 1987, Warren has been nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars 16 times, having been recognized for the music she wrote for popular films such as Con Air, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, RBG, Breakthrough, and Flamin’ H๏τ. Nevertheless, Warren has lost the Academy Award each time, and this series of losses now includes the 2025 Oscars with her work on Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight.

While Warren’s losing streak at the Academy Awards is extraordinary, it is not the worst. The current record for the most Oscar losses is held by sound mixer Greg P. Russell, who failed to win a single award with a staggering 17 nominations. Also, 16 Oscar nominations are still achievements that serve as testaments to Warren’s talent, and she should be praised as one of cinema’s most prolific songwriters.

Diane Warren Nearly Lost Best Original Song For 10 Consecutive Years

Diane Warren Almost Set Another Record For Herself At The Oscars

Warren nearly received another record after being snubbed at the 2025 Oscars with her 16th nomination. Had she been nominated for Best Original Song in 2016, Warren would’ve lost in this category for 10 consecutive years, beginning with her song in 2015’s The Hunting Ground and ending with her latest project, The Six Triple Eight.

Warren may have missed out on one record, but she still set another with her 16th Oscar nomination. As of 2025, she has achieved the record for the most Academy Award nominations by a female songwriter. With her work on The Six Triple Eight, Warren broke the record set by composer Marilyn Bergman, who had 15 nominations in her lifetime.

The fact that Warren was nominated for such a prestigious award for her song in The Six Triple Eight shows that she deserves to win, but the reason she keeps being denied an Oscar for her work remains a mystery.

While Diane Warren has been a fixture of Hollywood for decades, her work has yet to be fully recognized by the Academy after achieving a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 2025 Oscars. The fact that Warren was nominated for such a prestigious award for her song in The Six Triple Eight shows that she deserves to win, but the reason she keeps being denied an Oscar for her work remains a mystery. Fortunately, Warren received an Academy Honorary Award for her contributions to the film industry in 2022, somewhat making up for her frequent snubs.
