Before making a name for himself as the creator of Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan wrote the action thriller Sicario, and the 2015 movie is now available on Netflix. In the years since Yellowstone debuted in 2018, Sheridan has become a king of TV. Following the success of his crime-fueled Western series, he expanded his TV empire with Yellowstone spinoffs, 1883 and 1923, which just returned for season 2. In addition, he created other crime dramas, like Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman. Like Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan’s other shows have done exceedingly well, building a loyal fanbase.
While Sheridan’s name might be best known for his work behind the camera, he started his career as an actor and continues to appear in his own shows from time to time. Nearly 20 years after his industry debut, Sheridan directed his first movie, 2011’s Vile. While he has directed two more movies since then, Wind River and Those Who Wish Me ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, Sheridan has also found immense success as a screenwriter. In addition to Wind River and Those Who Wish Me ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, Taylor Sheridan’s movies include Hell or High Water, Without Remorse, and both Sicario movies.
Sicario Is Now Streaming On Netflix – What The Movie By Taylor Sheridan Is About
Emily Blunt Leads Sicario’s Stellar Cast
A decade after releasing in theaters, Sicario is now available to stream on Netflix for subscribers in the US. The action thriller, which marked Taylor Sheridan’s first stint as a screenwriter, was directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is now gearing up for the last installment of his Dune trilogy. Emily Blunt leads Sicario‘s standout cast as Kate Macer, an FBI agent brought onto an elite task force attempting to take down a boss for the Mexican drug cartel. In order to do so, the task force dangerously messes with the cartel’s operations as a way to bring the drug lord out of the shadows.
Aside from Blunt, who was praised for her performance, Sicario also features characters played by Josh Brolin, Benicio del Toro, Daniel Kaluuya, Jon Bernthal, and Victor Garber, all of whom bring something different to the table for a tense, action-packed drama. Dealing with the cartel war subsequently allows the movie to jump back and forth across the US and Mexican border, allowing Villeneuve to utilize unforgettable filming locations and set pieces. In fact, Sicario was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Cinematography, but lost to The Revenant.
Why Reviews For Sicario Are So Good
The Crime Thriller Was One Of The Best Movies Of 2015
While Sicario didn’t go on to win any Academy Awards, the Taylor Sheridan-written story ended up becoming an achievement for all involved in bringing it to life. The movie made around $85 million from a $30 million budget (via Box Office Mojo), which was better than predicted. Those numbers were likely enhanced by the positive buzz surrounding the movie, considering how well it was received by critics. Sicario is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a 92% critics score and 85% score from audiences. Sicario also found itself on several end-of-year best lists in 2015.
The story by Sheridan explored the war on drugs, resulting in a tense story full of adrenaline-inducing action sequences, brutally raw characters, and a pulse-pounding score.
As mentioned, Sicario‘s cast had a lot to do with the positive praise, specifically Emily Blunt’s performance as Kate Macer. The story by Sheridan explored the war on drugs, resulting in a tense story full of adrenaline-inducing action sequences, brutally raw characters, and a pulse-pounding score. Of course, it certainly helped to have Denis Villeneuve in the director’s chair. Though some may argue that it’s not Villeneuve’s best movie, Sicario should still be honored as one of his top тιтles.
Sicario 3 Is Still In Development – Everything We Know
Sicario Is Set To Become A Trilogy
Following the success of Sicario, a sequel тιтled Sicario: Day of the Soldado went into development, with Taylor Sheridan back as the writer. This time, Stefano Sollima took over as director, and some casting changes altered the story’s focus. Emily Blunt didn’t return for Sicario 2, and instead, the movie focused on Benicio del Toro’s ᴀssᴀssin character, Alejandro Gillick. Josh Brolin also reprised his role, but the movie introduced a few new characters, such as a human trafficker played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Isabela Merced, who portrayed the daughter of a drug lord.
Before Sicario: Day of the Soldado was even released in 2018, a third film was announced to be in development. The movie, which is said to be тιтled Sicario: Capos, is still in the process of being written. There’s no word on who will direct Sicario 3, but Taylor Sheridan and filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie are involved with the sequel in some capacity. Those looking forward to the next installment of the Sicario trilogy would surely like to see returning characters from previous entries, and those cast announcements should come sooner rather than later.
