Captain America: Brave New World’s Danny Ramirez Reveals Tom Cruise Was Major Inspiration For The Falcon’s Flying Scenes

Falcon star Danny Ramirez attributes his flight skills in the MCU’s Captain America: Brave New World to Top Gun: Maverick co-star Tom Cruise. Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres made his MCU debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where he received Sam Wilson’s Falcon wings before Sam officially became Captain America. By the time the events of Captain America: Brave New World kick off, Joaquin Torres has already received a major upgrade that grants him the тιтle of the MCU’s Falcon — Captain America’s loyal companion.

Speaking to Interview, Joaquin Torres actor Danny Ramirez was asked what his experience was like flying as Falcon in Captain America: Brave New World. Ramirez thanks his experience playing Lieutenant Mickey “Fanboy” Garcia in Top Gun: Maverick, where he flew alongside Tom Cruise. Ramirez kept Cruise in mind when adjusting his technique, thinking “Tom’s maybe going to watch this and if he does, I better come correct.” Read Danny Ramirez’s full response below:

“I felt like if Tom [Cruise] saw my body positioning, he’d be judging the aerodynamics. You’ll see in the BTS, I’m holding proper form, so whether or not body parts were replaced, that’s not on me. I was aerodynamic, and banking when I had to bank, and trying to make sure that my head was in the right position because wind will then affect lift, and all these things. […] I think that’s what was instilled in me having done Top Gun. ‘Tom’s maybe going to watch this and if he does, I better come correct.’ So there were days that I would be the only one putting on a G-force face. Just because Sam’s suit is a way more advanced thing that I’m like, ‘Alright, he’s under a different reality.’ Mine’s a little bit more analog, and so we have tubes to breathe, and I’m the literal cockpit. I’m the jet.”

What Danny Ramirez’s Tom Cruise Comments Mean For Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America And Falcon’s Flight Scenes Are Rooted In Real-Life Flying Techniques

Captain America: Brave New World is full of extravagant elements and characters, from Captain America’s vibranium suits to Red Hulk himself. However, Captain America and Falcon’s flying scenes are more realistic than they appear to be at first sight. Although mechanical wings like Captain America and Falcon’s don’t exist in the real world yet, their flying technique is based on real-life aircraft and wingsuit flight practices. Danny Ramirez certainly understands this, having trained for his Top Gun: Maverick role only a couple of years before Captain America: Brave New World.

Danny Ramirez mentions that he kept in mind the possibility that Tom Cruise would watch his flying scenes with a critical eye. Tom Cruise is known not only for performing his own stunts in all his action movies, but also for pushing the envelope with every new stunt he devises. Sharing the screen with Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick — which features practical stunts — certainly makes Tom Cruise a mentor of sorts for Danny Ramirez.

Tom Cruise Would Be A Great Addition To The MCU

Tom Cruise with the MCU's Iron Man behind him.

Tom Cruise is an action movie legend, yet he hasn’t played a single superhero movie role in his whole acting career. Tom Cruise was famously considered for Tony Stark before Robert Downey Jr. was cast in Iron Man‘s main role. Since then, Cruise has stuck with action movies like Top Gun: Maverick and the Mission: Impossible franchise. Cruise’s fondness for practical stunts could provide the MCU with outstanding action sequences, if not in complicated feats on land, then in exciting flight sequences like Top Gun: Maverick‘s.
