Daredevil: Born Again Showrunner Addresses Series’ Late-Production Overhaul, Reveals He SH๏τ 3 Episodes Worth Of Additional Material

Showrunner Dario Scardapane and Marvel executive producer Sana Amanat discuss Daredevil: Born Again‘s reshoots and explain why three episodes’ worth of material had to be added to Matt Murdock’s first solo MCU series. Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again is the spiritual sequel to Netflix’s three-season Daredevil show. After his brief appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock stars in his own series, where he faces off against Wilson Fisk and Benjamin Poindexter, plus a new villain self-named “Muse”.

In an interview with Collider, Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane and Marvel Studios executive producer Sana Amanat were asked how much of the series’ was rewritten and resH๏τ. Scardapane explains that despite their quality, six episodes were reworked, and “three episodes’ worth” of material was added in order to enhance “Fisk and Matt, a little more action, pathos”. Amanat adds that the team “wanted to make it a bit darker and more intense and offer that connective tissue that just wasn’t quite there before” to make Daredevil: Born Again more faithful to Netflix’s Daredevil. Read Scardapane and Amanat’s full response below:

Dario Scardapane: “Quite a bit. Quite a bit lived. The thing is, and I think Sana can speak to this, they had that time during the strike to take a look at what they had, and those six episodes were super solid—I saw them way later. They were super solid, but the issue was bringing up the themes and feelings that we loved from the old show and context. I’ll say that over and over again. That first episode is the one that takes us into the run, and we needed to have those first 15 minutes of that first episode to set the stage.

What we ended up doing was the amount of additional material was essentially three episodes worth, and then quite a bit of intersтιтial material inside the body of the middle six. I feel like it was mostly enhancement, and it was really bringing up the stuff that we loved a little more—Fisk and Matt, a little more action, pathos. The show was there. It wanted to be something; we just had to do some things to draw that out.”

Sana Amanat: “And again, credit to Matt Corman and Chris Ord. Those writers, some of which stayed on with us in this new writers’ room, really gave us, also, a naturalistic and real-world New York, as well, and that’s really what we wanted to build upon. But yes, like Dario said, it was elements where we wanted to pull on threads. We wanted to make it a bit darker and more intense and offer that connective tissue that just wasn’t quite there before, but that connective tissue to the previous show, of course, with our returning characters and telling the drama of who they are, almost seven to eight to 10 years later. We don’t know the exact timeline around that.)”

What Dario Scardapane And Sana Amanat’s Comments Mean For Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil: Born Again May Not Have Changed Much During Reshoots

Three episodes’ worth of new material is quite a lot of time for a show like Daredevil: Born Again. However, showrunner Dario Scardapane and Marvel executive producer Sana Amanat affirm that Daredevil: Born Again‘s reshoots only enhanced the story that had already been written for the series. Which exact parts of the show were modified and which were scrapped are still unknown, and clues will likely appear once the entirety of Daredevil: Born Again has been aired.

Showrunner Dario Scardapane emphasizes the importance of Daredevil: Born Again‘s first episode, which has been repeatedly described as a key event in Matt Murdock’s journey in previous interviews. Whatever happens in Daredevil: Born Again‘s premiere episode, it will surely split Daredevil’s overarching story in two, marking a new beginning during his first MCU solo installment and honoring the series’ subтιтle. After all, this event is so important that it stayed intact as six episodes were reworked.

Daredevil: Born Again Might Be An Essential Chapter In The MCU’s History

Daredevil: Born Again is gearing up to shake up the MCU’s street-level world, and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock likely won’t be the only character affected by the events of his series. Wilson Fisk, Frank Castle, and other street-level heroes and villains will start a new chapter in their respective journeys in their first proper MCU installment. Regardless of whether they appear or not, characters like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist will also feel the ripples of Daredevil: Born Again‘s story, and the series’ reshoots certainly guaranteed these effects are appropriate to the show and the franchise as a whole.
