As she continues broadening her genres, a Daisy Ridley family comedy is surging on streaming seven years after its divisive original release. Largely known for portraying Rey, a formidable and courageous Jedi, in Star Wars, Ridley continues to reprise her role in various franchise projects. Prior to Disney’s announcement that Rey would appear in a future Star Wars movie, possibly named New Jedi Order, the character was last shown on-screen in the 2019 sequel The Rise of Skywalker. Since then, Ridley has starred in Kenneth Branagh’s ensemble mystery Murder on the Orient Express and the failed sci-fi adaptation Chaos Walking.
In more recent years, Ridley appeared in and produced the romantic dramedy Sometimes I Think About Dying and the psychological thriller Magpie, both of which earned praise from audiences. She also played real-life, decorated swimmer Gertrude Ederle, who successfully swam across the English Channel in 1926, for the biographical drama Young Woman and the Sea. Along with these live-action movies, Ridley has lent her voice to documentaries, as well as The Inventor, where she portrayed Marguerite de Navarre.
Peter Rabbit Is Raking In Views On Streaming
The 2018 Comedy Is On The Netflix Charts
In the 2018 comedy Peter Rabbit, Ridley voiced Cotton-Tail, a sibling of the eponymous character. The movie, which features a blend of CGI and live-action elements, follows Peter (James Corden) and his frequent encounters with a neighboring garden and its owner. Along with Ridley and Corden, the cast of Peter Rabbit included Domhnall Gleeson, Rose Byrne, Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki and Sam Neill, among others. Upon premiering, the film received divisive reactions, but generated over $351 million globally, leading to the release of its 2021 sequel, The Runaway.
Now, seven years after debuting in theaters, Peter Rabbit is drawing audiences on Netflix. As of the time of writing, the family film sits at No. 10 on the streaming platform’s Top 10 chart of Movies Today, behind another 2018 release in the Laura Dern-starring biographical drama, Trial by Fire. Other movies on the list include recent additions Venom: The Last Dance at No. 1, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves at No. 2, Watcher at No. 3, To Catch a Killer at No. 4, and Demon City at No. 5, as well as holdovers Ted 2 at No. 6, Minions at No. 7 and Sing at No. 8.
Our Take On The Peter Rabbit Streaming Success
It Offers Star-Studded Fun For Families
The current success of Peter Rabbit, as it surges on Netflix, may be attributed to its family-friendly premise or awareness of the popular character and cast, including Daisy Ridley. Given how audiences responded to the movie in its initial release, perhaps an increase in viewership will spawn more positive reactions as well. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a critic-based score of 64%, while the Popcornmeter stands at only 56%. However, the box office indicates that there is sizable appeal to Peter Rabbit, and it will be interesting to see whether it can continue climbing the streaming charts.
