“We’re All Too Old”: George Clooney’s Sequel Tease Is Exactly Why You Should Be Excited For Ocean’s 14

While Ocean’s 14 reviving the Ocean’s franchise might seem like a surprising move, star George Clooney’s self-aware comments about the belated sequel imply that the reboot will address its most obvious issue. The Ocean’s movies are all fun, fast-paced heist thrillers, so the news that Ocean’s 11 would receive a prequel that reunited Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling didn’t come as a major shock. What is more surprising is the news that the reboot Ocean’s 14 will see The Fall Guy director David Leitch bring the original cast back together for one last adventure.

While Robbie and Gosling’s prequel lingers in Development Hell, Ocean’s 14 has officially been announced. This is somewhat unexpected considering the fact that it has been 18 years since Ocean’s Thirteen wrapped up the original trilogy in 2007. 2018’s female-led reboot, Ocean’s Eight, did keep the franchise alive, but it did not bring back any cast members from the original movies. Since Ocean’s Eleven was released in 2001 and the trilogy was over only six years later, bringing the large ensemble cast back after almost two decades seems like a surprising choice.

Ocean’s 14 Dealing With The Group’s Age Promises A Very Different Ocean’s Movie

The Ocean’s Gang Were A Lot Younger In Their First Outing

Fortunately, series star George Clooney admitted that he and his co-stars are now too old for another Ocean’s sequel, which means the movie will most likely address this within its story. In a New York Times profile, Clooney conceded “It’s like we’re all too old to do the jobs we used to be able to do” while discussing the upcoming sequel. Considering original Ocean’s series stars Bernie Mac and Carl Reiner pᴀssed away between Ocean’s Thirteen and the announcement of Ocean’s 14, it is good to hear that the franchise won’t ignore the gang’s aging.

Seeing Clooney and Pitt playing aging characters rather than unflappable young heroes would make it even easier to root for Danny and company.

Ocean’s 14 could be a surprisingly elegiac end to the series that addresses the many ways that its quick-thinking heroes have to adapt to later life as con men. Seeing multiplex icons like Clooney and Pitt playing aging characters rather than unflappable young heroes would make it even easier to root for Danny and company, and this would add a level of poignancy to the otherwise escapist tone of the series.

How Much Older The Ocean’s 14 Cast Will Be Compared To The Original Movie

Pitt and Clooney Are 24 Years Older Than They Were In Ocean’s 11

George Clooney will be 63 filming Ocean’s 14, whereas he was only 40 when he made 2001’s Ocean’s Eleven. Pitt is now 61 and was 38 when he filmed Steven Soderbergh’s original heist movie. Casey Affleck will be 49 filming Ocean’s 14, and was only 26 in the original movie, while Matt Damon will be 54 compared to the 31-year-old that he was during the production of Ocean’s Eleven. Don Cheadle is now 60 and was 37 in the original movie.

Meanwhile, Chinese acrobat Qin Shaobo was only 19 in the original movie and will be 43 in Ocean’s 14. Elliott Gould was already 62 in Ocean’s Eleven and will be 86 making Ocean’s 14. It goes without saying that the cast’s changing ages mean the story of Ocean’s 14 will feel very different to those of earlier movies in the Ocean’s franchise, but Clooney’s comments prove that the creators are aware of this major change.
