Jason Momoa’s Minecraft Character Proves One Hilarious Video Game Detail Will Happen In Live-Action

The new trailer for A Minecraft Movie hilariously references a common experience among game players (at least for those who find this rare item). The upcoming movie is the next in a long line of movie adaptations of video games, following the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Minecraft is unique among these movies, however, in that the video game itself doesn’t have a definitive story. Warner Bros had to get creative, and the final trailer demonstrates that this means some deeper cut references to the many items and features of Minecraft.

A Minecraft Movie hits theaters on April 4, 2025, so it’s officially time for Warner Bros to release more detailed movie trailers. The newest explores the world of Minecraft a bit further, providing further details about the story that has been constructed around this creativity-based video game. Along with some outrageous moments with Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and even Jennifer Coolidge, the trailer for A Minecraft Movie featured some fun Easter eggs to the game, one of which is the rare Elytra Wings.

The New Minecraft Trailer Gives A Better Look At The Movie’s Elytra Wing Suits

This Rare Minecraft Game Item Took Center Stage

In A Minecraft Movie‘s newest trailer, Black’s Steve is seen slapping some Elytra Wings on Momoa’s Garrett and Sebastian Eugene Hansen’s Henry. These bug wings are among the rarest items in the Minecraft game, which makes their moment in the trailer all the more exciting for long-time players. To make this Minecraft Easter egg even better, the characters’ first experience with the Elytra Wings is precisely how things would typically go with players. Garrett comically pushes Henry off the cliff, and it seems for a long moment that the rare Elytras have entirely failed to work.

The Elytra Wings Are True To The Game

In the Minecraft game, a player wearing Elytra Wings can’t simply jump from a cliff and fly to safety. However, attempting to do just this is a pretty common (and disastrous) experience among those who manage to secure the rare item. The wings must be activated to open up and work, and this requires jumping while in mid-fall. It’s evident in A Minecraft Movie‘s trailer that Henry didn’t get this tutorial before he was pushed from the cliff, leading Momoa’s character to ask Minecraft Steve if the Elytra Wings actually work (to which Black’s character hesitantly answers that they do).

While the jury is still out regarding whether A Minecraft Movie will be any good, such deep-cut references to more obscure game items or experiences among players is a good sign. Previous game-to-movie adaptations have been successful when they lean into players’ nostalgia and feature not just features of the game, but real-world experiences of those who have long loved to play. A Minecraft Movie could go wrong in dozens of ways, but moments and references like the Elytra Wings imply that the coming movie should at least be worth a knowing laugh.
