Rachel Zegler’s Snow White Box Office Projections Now Up To $22M Lower Than Already Middling Outlook

Snow White‘s box office projections are continuing to slip as its release approaches. The upcoming movie is a remake of the 1937 Disney musical, which was the first-ever animated feature produced in the United States. The live-action Snow White remake stars Rachel Zegler in the тιтle role as a young woman whose beauty provokes the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot), who jealousy guards her status as the “fairest of them all.” The new movie features the original’s classic songs by Larry Morey and Frank Churchill alongside new numbers by Pasek and Paul.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, at the time of writing, Snow White is projected to debut at the domestic box office with an opening weekend in a range between $48 and $58 million. This puts the movie on a significant downward slide that could see it coming in up to $22 million lower than its initial upper bound, as the movie’s long-range projections as of February 7 were between $63 and $70 million.

What This Means For Snow White

Its Prospects Are Questionable

It remains to be seen if these debut forecasts spell doom for the movie. If Snow White comes in at the bottom of its current projections and opens with $48 million, it will still most likely earn the second highest-grossing domestic opening weekend of 2025 up to that point, behind just Captain America: Brave New World ($88.8 million). However, it would nevertheless continue a dismal trend for recent Disney live-action remakes, marking the worst domestic debut since Tim Burton’s Dumbo opened with $45.9 million in 2019. Below, see a breakdown of the theatrical releases of Disney’s live-action remakes since then:

Disney’s Live-Action Debuts Since 2019

тιтle

Opening Weekend

Worldwide Gross

Dumbo (2019)

$45.9 million

$353.3 million

Aladdin (2019)

$91.5 million

$1.054 billion

The Lion King (2019)

$191.8 million

$1.662 billion

Cruella (2021)

$21.5 million

$233.5 million

The Little Mermaid (2023)

$95.6 million

$569.6 million

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024)

$35.4 million

$700.5 million

It is unknown if the Snow White remake will behave like The Little Mermaid or have a huge expansion like the prequel Mufasa: The Lion King, though the latter came out during the Christmas season, when тιтles are more likely to become sleeper hits. Depending on what its overall run looks like, it could potentially earn somewhere between $285.9 million and $500 million worldwide, based on its current projections. However, this would not be enough, as its reported budget of roughly $250 million likely places its break-even point somewhere around $625 million, a milestone that Little Mermaid never even reached.

Our Take On The Snow White Projections

Disney’s Recovery Will Probably Be Swift

While Snow White could easily become Disney’s latest live-action remake with a disappointing debut, its potential underperformance would make sense considering the fact that it is mired in controversy surrounding many aspects, including its representation of the “seven dwarfs,” Zegler critiquing the original movie, and more. However, Disney seems set to recover more or less instantly, as they will be following it with the Lilo & Sтιтch remake in May and the Moana remake in 2026, two тιтles that seem much more likely to become major blockbusters.
