The MCU’s First New Avengers Recruit Is Absolutely Not Who Anyone Would Have Expected

The Avengers are among the most popular teams in cinematic history, and the group’s lineup has recently expanded, with a strange and unexpected member joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe team. After four Avengers movies, and a slew of other Marvel films, the team has been tested against all kinds of threats, and proved their mettle. However, a new iteration of the team is set to emerge in Avengers: Doomsday, and the first new Avengers recruit teased for this team is arguably an unusual choice.

Notably, The Avengers have rejected characters like ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool from their team, evidencing the high standard their generally team has. The heroes who have been in the Avengers can broadly be defined by their strong morals, experienced fighting skills, and dedication to fighting against evil in a selfless fashion. Moving into Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it is clear that the new team, whoever it consists of, must also meet these conditions, as the world will depend on them. Still, one new Avenger in particular has suggested a slightly different outlook, and perhaps a lower standard for the team’s ᴀssembly.

Captain America Recruits Falcon As An Avenger

Joaquin Torres Is The Latest Falcon And The Latest Addition To The Avengers

In Captain America: Brave New World, Joaquin Torres becomes the new Falcon, and is invited to join the Avengers team. After appearing in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Torres, a United States Air Force lieutenant and intelligence officer, continued to work alongside Sam in the MCU. With Sam giving up the mantle of the Falcon, it was pᴀssed on to Torres, who uses a winged flight suit to fight alongside him. As a sidekick to Captain America, this new Falcon was an essential addition to Brave New World.

What was surprising, however, is that it appears there are bigger plans for Torres in the universe. Following in the path of Sam Wilson’s MCU appearances as the previous Falcon, Torres, after being sH๏τ but surviving, was inducted into the Avengers by Captain America himself. It makes sense that Captain America is the one putting together the team, and it makes sense that he would want his sidekick involved. However, there are a few glaring issues that need to be addressed before Joaquin can make a major impact within the team.

Why Falcon Is An Unexpected Avenger Heading Into Doomsday

Joaquin Torres Seems Woefully Unprepared For The Threat Of Doctor Doom

Even though Joaquin has been working alongside the new Captain America for some time, he still comes off as very inexperienced and fresh in Brave New World. Most notably, during the battle above the Celestial in the ocean, Torres was nearly killed. His fighting prowess is not of the highest level, and he comes across as a possible liability in battle. This does not disqualify him from the Avengers team, but it does make him a concern that would need to be addressed in some way before moving into the next Avengers film.

After all, like Sam, Joaquin does not have any superpowers. Changing from his comics history, Joaquin’s path is clearly modeled after Sam’s, and while his efforts to be a hero without powers are admirable, they may not be sufficient when facing Doctor Doom and the powers of the multiverse. With such great threats ahead, the Avengers clearly need to be careful about who they allow to join their team. With that said, depending on the size of the threats they face, perhaps they will have to take whatever help they can get.

Why Falcon Makes Sense As Sam’s Idea Of An Avenger

Sam Wilson Believes In The Power Of Humanity

Sam Wilson is an unusual figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has no powers, and yet has ascended in the ranks of the team throughout the years, and now stands as Captain America. Putting together this new team, it makes sense that Sam would see a lot of himself in Joaquin Torres. Each of them are unpowered heroes, and each of them have served in the US Military. They both know the values and ethics that are important to ideas of national defense, and this outlook could be an ᴀsset to the Avengers team and their purpose.

There is some satisfaction in seeing this new Captain America take on a Falcon of his own and look at bringing his ally into the Avengers at the ending of Captain America: Brave New World. Sam caring about and understanding the humanity that makes a hero has been a part of his character from the beginning. From working with soldiers with PTSD to talking down the Red Hulk, Sam has proven time and again how important humanity is to the success of the Avengers. Amongst gods and superpowered beings, there must also be humans, with all of their strengths and weaknesses.

Joaquin Torres is a worry within the new Avengers team, but it is good to see the team’s roster finally begin to expand. The new character has a lot to learn, but could also be an ᴀsset to the team in the upcoming films. Whatever shape the Avengers take in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is important that they remain a dynamic group that represents the best of humanity. With Sam Wilson and Joaquin Torres along to make this happen, it seems almost guaranteed.
