Den of Thieves 2: Pantera
‘s Netflix release date has been announced, and it’s not far off. Following the success of the first Den of Thieves in 2018, Gerard Butler returned as Big Nick O’Brien in a sequel that sees him reuniting with director Christian Gudegast and costar O’Shea Jackson Jr. Hitting theaters in January, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera follows Big Nick as he teams up with Jackson’s Donnie, his former nemesis, to rob the world’s largest diamond exchange. The film then made the jump to PVOD on January 28, and it’s now set to come to streaming.
Netflix now confirms that Den of Thieves 2: Pantera will release on the platform on March 20. This streaming release date comes two months and ten days following the film’s theatrical bow. The announcement can be found on the fifth slide of the Instagram post below, which highlights all of what arrives on the streamer in the month of March, including both original and licensed content:

What Den Of Thieves 2’s Streaming Release Date Means For The Movie
Will It Repeat What Made The Original Gerard Butler Movie A Success?
The first Den of Thieves was a respectable success at the box office in 2018, grossing $80 million on a $30 million budget. It was on streaming, however, that the first film really took off in popularity, and it would develop something of a cult following in the years that followed. The sequel hasn’t quite repeated the first film’s box office success. Made on a larger $40 million budget, Pantera grossed just $56 million worldwide, meaning it may not have broken even during its theatrical run.
The first film’s streaming success, however, suggests Pantera can’t be written off a disappointment just yet. The reception to the sequel has generally been positive from both critics and audiences. Though Mae Abdulbaki awarded the film a lackluster 5 out of 10 in her Den of Thieves 2 review for ScreenRant, the film currently enjoys a stronger 62% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 79% score from audiences. These scores being better than those for the original (see chart below) could indicate that the movie will gain momentum on home-viewing platforms.

Our Take On Den Of Thieves 2’s Netflix Release Date
It’s Sure To Become Another Streaming Hit
Butler continues to appear regularly in action movies, with some of them, like Olympus Has Fallen (2013), even starting franchises. There’s clearly an audience for Butler as an action star, and it seems likely that Pantera will become a hit on Netflix when it releases in March. It’s possible that Den of Thieves‘ success on streaming actually hurt the second film, as audiences who enjoyed it could just be waiting for the sequel to release on Netflix instead of checking it out in theaters.
Butler is expected to return to the Has Fallen franchise with the announced Night Has Fallen, but this film remains in development.
It has now been confirmed that Den of Thieves 3 is in the works, and it will be interesting to see what that film’s release strategy looks like. It’s unclear where Big Nick and Donnie will go next, but reliving the pair’s latest adventure will certainly become a lot easier when Den of Thieves 2: Pantera releases on Netflix.
