Morbius Ending & Marvel Movie Future Explained (In Detail)

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe was initially envisioned as a brand-new cinematic universe full of Spider-Man villains that would eventually include Spider-Man himself, and Morbius was one of those films, exploring the тιтular character’s origins. Featuring Jared Leto as Morbius, the film was poorly received, and a sequel was put on the back burner as Sony focused on their other films in the universe; Venom: The Last Dance, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter, finishing up those films in 2024 before stepping back from developing anymore in 2025 and beyond.

During the course of the movie, Morbius became a Living Vampire after injecting himself with a serum — spliced with vampire bat DNA — meant to cure his blood disease. It ended with a few character deaths and two mid-credits scenes that attempted to set up the future of the character. A lot happens at the end of Morbius, so it’s worth it to take a look at how the movie ended and what it means for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe as a whole.

Morbius Vs. Milo’s Abilities

Their Differences Explained

Michael Morbius tests out his various abilities throughout the film, learning that he’s agile, can heal quickly after a fight or a fall, he’s incredibly strong, can fly, and is able to use bat echolocation, a biological sonar, to find who he’s looking for, no matter where they might be. Milo has the same abilities as his brother because he took the serum Morbius did. However, Milo doesn’t get to show off these superhuman traits as much because he takes the serum after Morbius does, which gives the latter a bit of an advantage for a while.

The biggest difference in the pair’s abilities is how long they last. Because Milo has no problem feeding on human blood while it’s still pulsing through their bodies, he is stronger for a lot longer, constantly feasting on the nearest human to continue that kick. He’s able to walk, leap, fly and his skin has a healthier glow for longer because Milo isn’t beholden to the limited effects blood bags have.

Whereas Morbius intakes one or two blood bags at any given moment, shortening the window of time he has (from six to four hours) to employ his new skills, Milo is powerful all the time because he never stops killing for blood.

Martine Becomes A Living Vampire

What It Means For Her Future

Martine Bancroft working on lab equipment in the Morbius ending

Martine Bancroft was one of Morbius’ supporters throughout the film. Martine met her fate when Milo went after her to draw Morbius out into the open. Milo kills Martine, and it seems like that is the end of the road for her. However, Martine is bitten by Morbius and, unbeknownst to him, wakes up as a Living Vampire herself. She doesn’t have a blood disease, so it’s likely that she doesn’t need to rely so heavily on feeding to keep up her strength, but she will surely have the same bloodlust that Morbius and Milo have.

In the comics, Martine tends to ally with various characters, including FBI agent Simon Stroud, who is on the hunt for Morbius…

Martine in Morbius is a bit more grounded and level-headed than her comic book counterpart, so it’s possible she will need time to process what’s happened to her and how that affects her own work as a doctor. In the comics, Martine tends to ally with various characters, including FBI agent Simon Stroud, who is on the hunt for Morbius, which is something that could have been included in a potential sequel.

How Morbius’ Post-Credits Scenes Set Up A Sinister Six Team-Up

Michael Keaton Returns As Vulture

Vulture in new costume in Morbius

In Morbius’ post-credits scenes, Adrian Toomes (Vulture) appears in an empty jail cell after the multiverse breaks open (thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home) and transports him there. After getting out of jail, having committed no crimes in the world of Morbius, Vulture sets up a meeting with the Living Vampire. He tells Morbius that people like them — presumably ones with gifts — should team-up, blaming Spider-Man for being dropped in on another world. Though Morbius doesn’t know who Spider-Man is and has no reason to trust Vulture, he seems eager to work with the wing-suited villain.

With the introduction of Venom, Morbius, and the return of Spider-Man villains like Green Goblin, the post-credits scenes suggested Sony was gearing up to do a Sinister Six team-up at some point in their universe. That’s the only explanation why Morbius included Vulture at all, especially considering that he didn’t have an impact on the film’s main plot. Between the MCU and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, the introductions of several Sinister Six villains, including Mysterio, have already happened, but it seems unlikely for the project to ever come to fruition.

Why Does Vulture Meet With Morbius?

Vulture Purposely Sought Out Morbius

morbius ending explained

Beyond the attempts to string together a Sinister Six tease, Vulture’s meeting with Morbius doesn’t really make all that much sense. It’s unexplained and Morbius’ reasons for accepting the invitation make even less sense. Vulture mentions that they should team up because they both have abilities and are outsiders to their society. Perhaps Vulture wants to find a way back to the MCU and seeks out the ambitious, capable Morbius to do so. What’s more, Vulture sees Morbius as very powerful.

If Adrian wishes to go after Spider-Man as revenge for what happened in Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as for the split in the multiverse, of course he would find the one person powerful enough to help him exact his revenge. Morbius’ reasons, however, are a bit less clear. The Living Vampire may have killed Milo to stop him from harming others, but Morbius never indicated that the scientist was trying to do anything but help.

How The Morbius Ending Was Received

It Made Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Even More Confusing

Morbius using powers in Morbius

Like the entirety of Morbius, no one really liked the ending of the film, and there wasn’t much to get excited about, even with a tease of the Sinister Six. The biggest issue cited with the ending is that it doesn’t make sense for Vulture to even be in Morbius’ universe, as Spider-Man: No Way Home made it seem like only villains were coming into the MCU rather than villains that know he is Peter Parker getting teleported to other universes.

If Vulture was staying in Morbius’ universe and wanted to team up to take down his Spider-Man, then there really is no motivation for him either. It seemed like Sony didn’t necessarily know what they wanted to do, and threw together a Sinister Six tease hoping that viewers wouldn’t try to pick apart the logic. Of course, that didn’t happen and left people confused about the point of it, especially with how poorly received Morbius was as a whole.

Morbius Could Fight Garfield’s Spider-Man, Not Holland’s

The Sinister Six Was Teased For Garfield’s Franchise

Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man in No Way Home

Back in December 2013, a Sinister Six movie was announced by Sony as a part of The Amazing Spider-Man universe. The film was to be a spinoff that included Doctor Octopus and Kraven the Hunter as adversaries to the web-slinging superhero. However, the film was ultimately scrapped. Since the Sinister Six movie was meant for Andrew Garfield’s iteration of Spider-Man, and since Tom Holland had already fought several villains in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Morbius and Vulture could fight Garfield’s Peter Parker instead.

Even Venom was teased in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but nothing ever came about anything teased in that film, as Sony decided to reboot instead.

Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was incredibly well-received, and a renewed interest in seeing him return for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 could have resulted in Sony wanting to include villains like Vulture, Morbius, and even the original planned Kraven the Hunter, and Doctor Octopus. While there may be interest in seeing a continuation of Andrew Garfield’s character, it is unlikely that fans would want to see him duke it out against Morbius, or even Michael Keaton’s Vulture, given how poorly received Sony’s Spider-Man Universe movies have been.

Morbius’ Future Explained

A Sequel Is Unlikely

Morbius leaves off on a couple of cliffhangers — Martine waking up as a vampire and Vulture joining forces with the Living Vampire. Furthermore, the ending of the film doesn’t give Morbius any time to process the fallout with Milo and the deaths that occurred. Such storylines could have been further explored in a sequel, but Sony seems to have completely abandoned their shared Spider-Man Universe after seeing diminishing returns both critically and financially.

As of now, it seems like the only way that Morbius’ story could continue is in another entry into Tom Holland’s Spider-Man franchise, or if The Amazing Spider-Man 3 ever becomes a reality. Given how much Morbius was disliked, there doesn’t seem to be an audience desperate to see an official sequel to the film, becoming another casualty of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe that will likely never see a continuation.
