Francis Ford Coppola posts his reaction to Megalopolis
being nominated for several Razzies. His 2024 film, a pᴀssion project he’d worked on for decades and which he financed himself, released to sharply polarized reviews and failed to connect at the box office. It now finds itself nominated in six categories at the 45th Golden Raspberry Awards, which invert the Oscars by ‘honoring’ the worst films of the year, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Screen Combo (for the entire cast of Megalopolis).
In reaction to Megalopolis‘ Razzies contention, Coppola took to Instagram to say he’s “thrilled to accept” the nominations. In doing so, he calls out the cowardice of the industry today, and draws a point of comparison between Megalopolis and Jaques Tati’s Playtime, which has gone from being a financial failure upon release to a widely accepted cinema classic. He also thanked everyone who worked on the movie with him, and discussed the movie’s poor box office performance as an unimportant part of its release. See Coppola’s post below:

What Coppola’s Statement Says About Megalopolis’ Nominations At The Razzies
The Director Wears Them Like A Badge Of Honor
Reviews for Megalopolis have proven divisive among critics, with some praising Coppola for its directing and themes, while others criticized it for a lack of focus and narrative balance. Audience reactions leaned more on the negative, as the movie scored a 35% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter and a 4.7 out of 10 on IMDb. It was also a major failure at the box office, managing to earn just $14.3 million worldwide against a $120-136 million budget. Its six nominations at the Razzies only further emphasize the divisive nature of the film.
While it’s not one of Coppola’s best movies, the director’s statement about not following the rules and being proud of his nominations highlights how much time he’s spent trying to make the movie. He first got the idea for Megalopolis in 1977, later trying to produce the movie in both 1989 and 2001. However, studios refused to finance it, leading him to build a wine business from which he used $120 million of its profits to fund the film. Despite its negative reception, he’s clearly still proud because it was his decades-long pᴀssion project.
Our Take On Megalopolis’ 6 Razzie Nominations
It’s Not Surprising Given Its Polarizing Reception
With many negative reviews from critics and audiences alike, it’s no surprise Megaloplis has been nominated for so many Razzies. While Coppola’s response is admirable, sticking to his pride in the movie even in the face of so much negative press, it’s undeniable the film was a critical and commercial failure. His comparison to Playtime might be too presumptuous, but history will decide if the movie gets reevaluated in the future.
Coppola plans for his next movies to be an adaptation of the Edith Wharton novel Glimpses of the Moon, and Distant Vision, an experimental film project he started in 2015.
